Dog Days of Summer A PAW-SPECTIVE FROM OLIVE

Hello friends and furry companions! It’s been a whole year since I last took over the keyboard, and I have so much to report! Olive here, the proud four-legged member of Rinehardt Injury Attorneys. As the resident office dog, I’ve been busier than ever, and I’m excited to share my adventures and all the exciting happenings at the firm with you! The biggest news is that this year, we welcomed a new furry member to our team, Benji. Benji is technically my nephew because he belongs to my sister, Rachel. Benji is a 6-month-old Bernedoodle. He is full of energy and enthusiasm, and though he sometimes gets on my nerves, I must admit, his excitement is infectious. I’ve taken it upon myself to train Benji in proper office etiquette. No barking, always try to sleep while mommy is working, play quietly, and greet clients without jumping — Benji is learning the ropes, and I’m proud of his progress. Despite his antics, I look forward to seeing him on the mornings we are in the same office. One of the highlights of our week is when two team members visit the animal shelter to play and socialize with the dogs. Some weeks, they also volunteer at the local humane society. I’m so proud of our team for this initiative. It’s a great way to give back to our furry friends who haven’t found their forever homes yet. Although I wish I were allowed, I don’t get to tag along. I can tell by sniffing them when they come back that they got to meet lots of nice doggies who need homes! I also beam with pride knowing that my dad, John, continues his incredible work on the board of the Humane Society. This year, the firm donated $4,000 at the Paw-a-thon fundraiser! The donation was part of a fun Facebook contest where people shared “naughty pet” stories. For every submission, the firm donated $20. The naughtiest pet was selected at random during a radio show, and the winner was a female husky who trapped herself in a bathroom her owners intended to remodel down the road. The husky had different ideas and decided to start the demolition early! Needless to say, the

timeline for the project had to be moved up. There were so many hilarious stories, like Dandy, who loves to eat shoes; Vega, who brings mice into the house; and Mavis, who chewed a 2-foot hole in the carpet.

My new friend and coworker, Benji

I must say, I found many of these stories surprising, but I was glad because they made me look like an angel by comparison! I always try to be well-behaved. The worst thing I ever did was chew the corner of our brand-new coffee table. I am still embarrassed about it, but my mom, Hillary, patched it up with a furniture repair kit from Amazon. She did her best, but I can still see it.

This year has been filled with new friends, charitable deeds, and funny stories. As we embrace the dog days of summer, I’m reminded of the

wonderful community we have here at the firm. From helping shelter dogs to sharing laughter over naughty pet stories, it’s the small things that bring us joy and connect us all.

Wishing you all a tail-wagging summer!

Paws and kisses,

SPOTLIGHT ON SHELTER DOGS

Think About Adopting One of These Wonderful Pups

Summer Summer came to the dog shelter as a stray on June 17, 2023. She is approximately 3 years old and spayed. She is super sweet and very friendly. She can entertain herself for hours with a tennis ball.

Many members of our office staff volunteer weekly at the Richland County Dog Shelter. The shelter has well over a hundred dogs waiting for their forever homes. Some of them have been waiting longer than others. Below are some of our staff’s favorites who have been at the shelter for over a year, and who are available for adoption at the time this article was written. If you are considering adding a fur baby to your family, we hope you will consider adopting one of them! To start the application process, go to RichlandCountyOH.gov/

Scallop Scallop is a favorite of case manager Stephanie! She recently took her to a dog adoption event for the dog shelter. Scallop was adopted and brought back in February of this year so she

Arnette Arnette came to the dog shelter as a stray on July 15, 2023. She is approximately 2 years old. Arnette has a lot of energy and she weighs about 30–35 pounds. needs a committed family to take her in. She is about a year old. Scallop has special needs because she doesn’t seem to be able to hear. She is super sweet and very affectionate. She thinks she is a lap dog. If you sit down in a chair, she climbs all the way up and sits on your lap whether there is room or not. She is very playful and has done really well in playgroups with several other dogs at the shelter. Scallop is spayed and has her rabies vaccination.

Hadley Hadley came to the dog shelter as a stray on May 21, 2023. She is a little over a year old. Hadley is quite shy but warms up with time. Once she knows you, she loves attention and affection and playing with toys. She is a sensitive girl and will do her best with someone who appreciates that about her.

RINEHARDT ATTORNEYS DONATE $4,000 TO HUMANE SOCIETY OF RICHLAND COUNTY We are thrilled to announce that we recently donated $4,000 to the Humane Society of Richland County (HSRC) during their annual Paws-a-Thon fundraiser. Attorney Hillary Rinehardt and Case Manager Stephanie Hunt had the pleasure of presenting a “big” check to the organization as part of a contest initiated by Attorney John Rinehardt. As a dedicated animal lover, Attorney John Rinehardt had the idea for a “naughty pet” contest where people could post their stories and photos on the Humane Society’s Facebook page. The participation was overwhelming — there were countless stories of dogs and cats doing the naughtiest things. John promised to donate $20 for every entry. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Richland County community for rallying behind this cause and making the Paws-a-Thon fundraiser a resounding success. Together, we raised $11,670, which will go a long way to making a lasting impact on the lives of countless animals and creating a brighter future for them.

Overnight Oatmeal Pancakes

Celebrating National Dog Month

John loves pancakes, and these healthy overnight oatmeal pancakes are a new favorite! Hearty and packed with nutritious ingredients like rolled oats, whole wheat flour, and Greek yogurt, they make for a quick and easy breakfast your whole family will love (and Olive loves them, too!).

INGREDIENTS

• 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats • 2 large eggs • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt • 2 tbsp maple syrup, plus more for serving • 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup whole wheat pastry flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1/2 tsp baking soda • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional) • 1 mashed banana (optional) • Blueberries (optional)

August is a special time for dog lovers as we celebrate National Dog Month, a month dedicated to honoring our loyal and loving canine companions. This celebration not only acknowledges the joy dogs bring into our lives but also raises awareness about the importance of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. The origins of National Dog Month can be traced back to other celebrations. One of the most notable is National Dog Day, founded in the United States by animal advocate Colleen Paige in 2004. Celebrated annually on Aug. 26, National Dog Day was established to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and to acknowledge family dogs and working dogs that selflessly provide companionship, protection, and assistance. As the love for dogs and the recognition of their contributions to society grew, the idea of dedicating an entire month to celebrate dogs gained traction. International Dog Month was created to extend the celebration beyond a single day, allowing for a more comprehensive focus on various aspects of canine life, including adoption, training, health, and the special bond between dogs and humans. August was chosen for National Dog Month to coincide with the end of summer, a time when many people are still enjoying outdoor activities with their pets. The warm weather provides the perfect opportunity for dog-related events, such as adoption drives, charity walks, and educational seminars. Additionally, August is a great time to emphasize the importance of protecting dogs from heat-related illnesses and ensuring they are well-cared for during the hotter months. And there’s no better time to adopt a dog from your local dog shelter. Still plenty of time to get them trained before snow falls, and there are so many sweet pups looking for their forever homes!

DIRECTIONS

1. Whisk almond milk and apple cider vinegar together in a medium bowl. Let sit for 1–2 minutes. Then add rolled oats and stir to combine. Cover and place in the fridge overnight. 2. The next morning, add the eggs, Greek yogurt, maple syrup, and vanilla to the oat mixture and stir to combine. 3. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and mashed banana, if using, add to the egg mixture, and stir until just combined. 4. Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat coated with cooking spray. Once hot, pour pancake batter onto the skillet, using a 1/3 cup to measure. Sprinkle with blueberries, if using. 5. Cook until little bubbles start to form and you can easily get a spatula under the pancake. These pancakes take a little longer than regular pancakes to cook. Flip the pancake and cook for another 1–2 minutes or until the pancake is cooked through. Continue the process until you run out of batter. 6. Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup and banana slices or berries, if desired. Yummy!
