vide continuous cleansing). With Is rael is the omnipotent power of God committed to protect them. The psalmist clearly recounts the pro tecting hand of God over His people (Psa. 105:8-15 R.V.): “He hath re membered his covenant for ever, The word which he commanded to a thousand generations, The covenant which he made with Abraham, And his oath unto Isaac, And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a statute, To Israel for an everlasting covenant, Saying Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, The lot of your in heritance; When they were but a few men in number, Yea, very few, and sojourners in it. And they went about from nation to nation, From one kingdom to another people. He suffered no man to do them wrong; Yea, he reproved kings for their sakes, Saying, Touch not mine anointed ones, And do my prophets no harm.” Remember, friends, God’s hand of protection is upon Israel as a nation and He will not suffer them to cease as a people. Jeremiah has one of the strongest affirmations of this truth in the Bible. Says he (31:35-37 R.V.): “ Thus saith Jehovah, who giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordi nances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, who stirreth up the sea, 'so that the waves thereof roar; Jehovah of hosts is his name: If these ordinances depart from be fore me, saith Jehovah, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Thus saith Jehovah: If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, then will I also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith Jehovah.” What words could be more forceful than these to assure

us that God is determined to protect Israel, as a man zealously and care fully protects the very apple of his eye? The apple of the eye, lastly, speaks of That Which When Injured Causes General Intense Pain When a man’s pupil has been in jured, he feels intense pain. And this pain can be so general, as to make him sick. To injure Israel is to cause God intense pain. He says (Isa. 63:- 9): “ In all their affliction he was af flicted.” When Israel is mistreated, God reckons that His very name, His own excellence, is blasphemed. (Isa. 52:5.) We dare never forget that he who touches Israel for ill will not go un punished. Nations as well as individ uals have proved the truth of this passage of Scripture. On the other hand, we must also remember that he who touches Israel for good will not go unrewarded. (Matt. 25:40.) But those in Israel must keep some thing in mind as well. They must be willing to open their eyes to see the glory and the beauty of the Mes siah or they will never be able to behold the glorious sight. A little boy was born blind. At last an operation was performed; the light was let in slowly. Then one day his mother led him out of doors and uncovered his eyes, and for the first time in his life he saw the sky and the earth. “Mother,” he shouted, “ why did you not tell me it was so beautiful?” She burst into tears as she said, “ I tried to tell you, dear, but you could not understand me.” So it is when we seek to tell Israel what is in the Messiah. Unless they open their eyes by the Spirit, they cannot understand. END.

words of the Messiah and Saviour were in perfect accord with the state ment of Isaiah (43:10-12 R .V.): “Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and my servant whom I have chosen; that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am Jehovah; and besides me there is no saviour. I have declared, and I have saved, and I have showed; and there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah, and I am God.” This was the intention of God for Israel and still is. Sad it is that they are not letting the light shine to the peoples of the earth, as God meant for them to do. A Christian young man spent a summer in a lumber camp where he was surrounded by anything but Christian influences. Upon his return someone said to him, “ Didn’t you find it hard to live in such a place? Didn’t the others jeer at you for being a Christian?” “ Oh,” the young man said, “ they never found out.” Many in the world have never found out that Israel is God’s gateway for His light to come into the world, and it is because Israel has been unwilling. The apple of the eye is, fifthly, That Which is So Carefully Protected There is remarkable and abundant provision made for the protection of the pupil of the eye, of which many are unaware or think of very little. The protection consists of: (1) the strong frontal bones (to guard against a b low ); (2) the brow and eyelash (to protect against dust); (3) the lid (to guard against painful glare); (4) the tear-glands (to pro
