W ater was spurting all over the garden. Little rivers were running down the walk. Flowers were drowning in the flood ing waters. Timmy ran to tell his mother what had happened. He had been sitting in the yard as peaceful as an eight- year-old boy could be and reading a story book. But his quietness was interrupted when the water pipe broke. “ Come quick, Mommy. Every thing’s getting all wet and the flow ers Daddy planted last night are floating away.” Soon his mother hurried into the basement and turned off the main water pipe. She then went in the house to call the water department and tell them to come and repair the damage. Timmy followed along behind her, somewhat annoyed with the whole thing. “Why did this have to happen on such a nice day?” Timmy asked. “Well you know, dear, sometimes things happen that we aren’t exactly planning on. One day long ago Jesus was on His way from Judea to Galilee. By the time He came to the city of Samaria He was tired from His journey and sat down by Jacob’s well. While He was there a woman came to get some water. “ ‘Give me to drink,’ Jesus said to her. The Samaritan woman was sur prised that this One should ask her for a drink. She was not used to people of different countries even speaking to her. “ Then Jesus told her that He could give her of the T.iving Water. was hard for the woman to believe. She was like some of us who never believe anything unless we see it with our own eyes. She herself was carrying a water jar but she saw that Jesus had nothing to draw wa ter with. “ ‘Whosoever drinketh of this wa ter shall thirst again,’ Jesus said to her as they stood by the well. Then He explained that if a person drank of the Living Water he would never thirst. “Timmy, do you know what the Living Water means?” “Why, Mommy, sounds to me like it was Jesus Himself. But go on—S then what happened to the lady?” “Well, that woman accepted Jesus as her Saviour. She believed for her self that He was the Christ she had heard of and that He would be her strength in life both then and for ever. And one wonderful thing about this woman, which is a lesson for all of us, is that she left her waterpot and went into the city and told every one about her meeting with Jesus. Because she did this many came and heard Jesus’ message. “We read in the Bible that ‘many of the Samaritans of that city be lieved on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.’ ” “That was sure an interesting story,” said Timmy. “ Guess our bro ken water pipe was a good thing after all. I may never have heard about Jesus and the Samaritan wom an unless it happened.” His mother explained to Timmy: “That’s right.
