and selfish use. In some in stances it has proved to be a profitable business. O. H. S. What is the present need for Bible translators in missionary work? There are more than 2,000 languages spoken in the world. 1,800 of them do not have the whole Bible. 200 have the New Testament only; 500 have less than the New Testament; 100 have less than one book. 1,000 have nothing at all. Wycliffe Bible Translators The problem of sending out new missionaries to the field in view of the continued need for the support of the existing work and workers has been the cause for much prayer and thought cn the part of mission leaders. Tn order that the existing work might not suffer because of the appointment of new work ers, the following policy has been adopted by the Conserva tive Baptist Foreign Mission So ciety. New appointees shall be sent to the field only when their annual recurring support has been underwritten and provision made for their initial non-re curring expenses involved in their outgoing expense. The annual recurring support includes the following: Salary, pension, premiums, transporta tion (figured on round-trip ba sis), field expense, contingent and administration. The non recurring item, or outgoing ex pense, consists of the following: initial passage to the field, out fit, shipping of outfit, language study, deputation expense. This policy makes it neces sary for the new missionary, the board and the entire constituen cy to wait upon God in prayer and faith to supply the need. It is understood that contribu tions for the sending out of new missionaries shall not draw from the already established chan nels of support, but shall be in addition to the usual contribu tions made for the work. CBFMS Principles and Policies Financial problem involved in send ing out new missionaries.

What is the greatest problem in the life of a missionary? The greatest problem is not the physical hardship, nor being without some of the conven iences of home, but the greatest problem I believe is self. It is difficult to adjust one’s self to his field of service, other mis- sioparies and the job to be done. David Landers, student Practical Missionary Training Missionaries attempt in var ious ways to evangelize the na tions to which they are sent. The extent and variety of the work which the missionary is called upon to perform is much greater than the people at home are apt to think. He must be at the same time a preacher, a teacher, a translator, a financier, a judge, an author, an editor, an architect and a musician. The great variety of the work necessitates a well-rounded man. R. B. Pecry The Gist of Japan How generous should American Christians be in granting requests for financial assistance from na tional Christians in other lands? This depends largely on the conditions of the country from which the request comes. I have just received a letter from a young pastor in a Spanish speaking country. He is request ing personal assistance for the erection of a church building to relieve the crowded conditions of his Sunday school. He also indicates that his wife and child are in need. Now, even though this young man is a personal friend, I have a growing con viction that it would be better in the long run if he presented these needs to the members of his own congregation. If he gets in the habit of asking for for eign funds to carry on I fear that the roots of his faith will not go very deep. There is another angle to this problem. Many non-Christians in foreign lands secure names and addresses of Christian peo ple in the U.S. for the purpose of accumulating funds and goods for their own personal What is the extent of a missionary's labor?
