Helps For the Children Better Than the Mighty Prov. 14:9-29; 15:1-5; 16; 20; 25 MEMORY VERSE: "H e that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city" Prov. 16:32. Boys and girls frequently admire those who are physically strong and beautiful. They wish that they could be among those who always w in the race or the con test, or that people would call them brave or strong. God’s W ord tells us some things that make God’s children greater than those who are strong physically. As boys and girls grow bigger they are surprised when they learn about those things that make people truly great. Remember that the book of Proverbs contains many of God’s rules for living a happy life. As you read the chapters from the book of Proverbs that are listed at the head of this lesson, make a list of those things which make people great in God’s sight. You w ill notice that the tongue is men tioned ofteii. Although the tongue is one of the smallest parts of the body, it causes more sin and difficulty than does any other part! Some children think that it is smart to say unkind and boast ful things to others. God tells us that those who say angry and lyin g words with their tongues displease H im and cause others to dislike them. “ He that is slow to anger is better than the m ighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” Sometimes those who are winners in races and contests cannot control their own lips! Controlling self is much harder than controlling others! Nov. 14, 1954 This study in values is a study in con trasts, such as the value of right over wrong, uprightness over against wicked ness, spiritual values over against mater ial values. Contrasts in Seeking and Trusting 11:27, 28 In verse 27 it is brought to our atten tion that the one who seeks after the good w ill be rewarded in the end. On the other hand the mischief-maker, who rejoices in the hurt of his neighbor, shall come to hurt himself. In verse 28 we are reminded of the fact that genuine CONTINUED ► A Study in Values Prov. 11:27, 28; 13:7; 15:13-17; 2 0 :1 1 ,1 2 ; 22:1-4 Pointers on the Lesson

Nov. 7, 1954 The Splendor of Self-Control Prov. 14:29; 15:1-3; 16:32; 20:1; 23:29-35 Pointers on the Lesson

Today’s lesson provides instruction on the very important matter of self-control. Temper, animation, vitality, zeal are all good things but if they get out of control they can do untold damage. Be Slow to Wrath 14:29; 16:32 Bad temper is always a sign of weak ness. The man who is filled with the Spirit of God can afford to quietly wait on H im to work things out alright, even though at the time they seem to be going awry. Be Slow to Speak 15:1-3 The tongue is a m ighty member cap able of doing untold damage or o f pro ducing limitless blessing. See James, chap ter three, for the best commentary on the tongue in existence. A careful, stud ied answer w ill often disarm one who is ready to give vent to some caustic remark. Heated words w ill only pour oil on the flame. The wise man w ill use his knowledge to the best advantage. Fools speak first and think afterwards. One thing sure the Lord is always pres ent and observes what use w e make of our tongues, whether idle words or whole some. Be Quick to Resist Strong Drink 20 :1; 23:29-35 One need not comment at length on these words. A ll he needs to do is to look about him and see how true the words of these passages are. Intemper ance when it comes to liquor in its vari ous forms has wrought a fearful toll in sorrow, crime, heartbreak, etc., etc. No other vice has caused such misery in the human race. W ine is a mocker. It ensnares its victims in appealing ways and then ridicules them when it has them under its control (20 :1 ). Then look at all the things included in the list of results of being a victim of the drink habit. An y sensible man or woman, it would seem, would heed the exhortations here con tained and stay away from this great destroyer. W ine, of course, has a medicin al use as is indicated by 1 Tim . 5:23 but this should be exercised only by the ad vice of a medical authority.
