as only Jehovah is? The major part of our attention w ill center upon Psalm 142. The psalmist was in great distress, hound ed b y Saul. He was in a cave at Adul- lam or Engedi hiding from his enemy. He felt himself forsaken and in need of help from heaven. The refuge in the cave did not satisfy. The Need of a Refuge vv. 1-4 These verses show the extent of the psalmist’s need. A trap had been laid for him. N o one seemed to care about his condition. Even his friends seeming ly had forsaken him. Every man needs a refuge. There are enemies seeking to capture the soul. He needs a refuge in temptation. He needs a refuge against the cry of an accusing conscience. He needs a refuge in the hour of death and from judgment. The Provision of a Refuge v. 5 Jehovah-Jesus is man’s refuge. In the midst of the psalmist’s despondence he was reminded of his refuge and his soul was encouraged. In order to provide a sufficient refuge for man it was neces sary for Christ to come and suffer at Calvary. H e was the Rock that was cleft. Can you say, “ Thou art my ref uge” ? The Comfort of Such a Refuge vv. 6, 7 Realizing the Lord as his refuge the psalmist did not hesitate to enter into the privileges which it entails. There was the comfort of prayer ( w . 6, 7a), and of fellowship (7b ), and of full satisfaction (7c). Psalm 46 needs little comment. Its message needs to be accepted and made a part of our every-day living. It is good to be reminded that this Psalm was the basis for Luther’s great hymn, “ A M ighty Fortress Is Our God.” In the spirit of this hymn and the Psalm providing its inspiration, God’s children can overcome every foe. Helps For the Children When We Are Afraid Psalm 46 MEMORY VERSE: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee" Psa. 56:3. A re you sometimes afraid in the dark or when you are ill or when you do not know which choice to make? A mission ary to Africa told of lyin g in bed one night listening to the savages chanting their death song which they sang before they killed an enemy. H e knew that they wanted to take his life while he was sleeping. A t first he was frightened and decided not to sleep. Quietly the Lord Jesus spoke to his heart saying, “ I w ill both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” The missionary went to sleep at once. W hen he awakened, the sav ages had slipped away into the darkness; and some of them came back the next day to hear about the Saviour! God’s W ord tells us that our God never slumbers nor sleeps. W e can always be certain of God’s power and love, and with the psalmist we can say, “What time I am afraid, I w ill trust in thee.” END.
