DESIGN SPOTLIGHT

TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF DESIGNERS

What was your experience of the Errigal Undergrad programme? I started with Errigal in October 2018; I had originally approached Errigal to seek out placement for my Foundation Degree in Architectural Technology with Belfast Metropolitan College. Towards the end of my placement, I got offered a place on Errigal's undergraduate programme and worked as a member of the Design team. I recently qualified this year with a 2:1 from University of Ulster. I would recommend the Errigal undergraduate program to anyone starting out in the industry. The experience you gain while working part time along side doing a related course is invaluable.

How has your transition been from Undergrad to full time designer? It has been a challenging but rewarding one. The scope of design I get to work on now and the responsibility placed on me is a lot more than when I was attending university. I am enjoying the challenge of stepping up and the exposure to new areas of design is exciting.

What do you feel the benefits are for designers getting out on site? There are many, it allows a better understanding of details, especially in your early career. It gives you a chance to see the construction of the project first hand rather than just in a 2D & 3D formats. One benefit I found most of all is it gives you a chance to interact with the team and talk through any issues or points they may have to help you.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time? What are your aspirations for your career? I would like to continue to lead the design on different projects to gain the experience. I would love to learn more about the passive house standard of building and become passive house certified. To be design lead on a Passive House or EnerPHit project would be an interesting challenge.
