SECURE YOUR DEVICES, PROTECT YOUR DATA: WHY PHYSICAL SECURITY STILL MATTERS
THE HIDDEN COST OF STOLEN DEVICES Over three-quarters (76%) of organisations surveyed said they had experienced device theft in the past two years. That number climbs higher in hybrid and remote working environments, where employees are more mobile and devices are more exposed. The consequences stretch far beyond replacing a piece of hardware: • Legal or regulatory action: 33% faced penalties because stolen devices contained sensitive data. GDPR fines, for instance, can run up to €20 million or 4% of global turnover. • Stricter (and often costlier) security measures: 33% had to overhaul policies and invest in extra layers of protection. • Lost productivity: 32% reported disruption to daily work, with staff unable to function without their primary devices. continued overleaf >
Rarely a week goes by without headlines about cyberattacks and data breaches. Businesses spend millions shoring up their networks, deploying encryption, and training staff to recognise phishing scams. But one crucial layer of protection is often overlooked: the physical security of our devices. A stolen laptop, misplaced tablet, or unsecured desktop isn’t just a hardware loss. It can open the door to unauthorised access, regulatory fines, reputational damage, and hours of lost productivity. As workplaces become more flexible - blending offices, homes, and coffee shops - the risks are multiplying. A new study commissioned by Kensington, surveying 1,000 senior IT leaders across the US and Europe, shines a light on how businesses are responding. The findings underline one clear message: simple physical security measures, such as device locks, are among the most cost-effective tools we have to stop breaches before they start.
