“smitten before Israel” (v. 10). Sam uel would remind the people that the victory came from God alone, so he erected a .memorial, calling it Eben ezer, or, “Hitherto hath thé Lord helped us” (v. 12). Points and Problems 1. "And the Lord was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground" (1 Sam. 3:19). Falling is a common metaphor in practically all languages for failing. The thought of this verse is that the servant of the Lord shall not fail. How can he fail if God is with him? As it was with Samuel, so it is true of every servant of the Lord; his ministry shall not come to naught (cf. Isa. 55:11). 2. "It ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods" (1 Sam. 7:3). The test of the reality of repentance is not simply being sorry for the sins of the past. Many inmates of penal in stitutions are sorry for their past deeds insofar as they were caught doing them. .But they do not possess a god ly sorrow in that they have offended God. The true test of repentance is the determination to turn away from sin and to do God’s will. 3. "Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you" (1 Sam. 7:5). The word “Mizpeh” means watehtower or outlook point. It was the place of public assembly. Israel needed to come together for prayer, sacrifice, and re-dedication. God still warns His people against “forsaking the as sembling of ourselves together” (Heb.

10:25). No amount of private deyo- tion \vill take the place of public wor ship. The child of God needs both. 4. "I will pray for you unto the Lord" (1 Sam. 7:5). Samuel is else-' where quoted in Scripture as the type of successful intercessors (cf. Jer. 15:1; Psa. 99:6). The book of 1 Samuel is a remarkable study on prayer. Note that (1) Samuel was given by God in answer to prayer (1:10-28); (2) vic tory was given to Israel through Sam uel’s prayer (7:5-10); (3) Samuel sought the Lord in time of sorrow (8:5, 6); (4) Samuel considered prayerless- * »ess a sin (12:19, 23); and (5) some times God turns a deaf ear to prayer (28:6). 5. "They . . . drew water, and poured it out before the Lord" (1 Sam. 7:6). This was a symbolical act by which the Israelites showed their sin cere desire to pour out their hearts in repentance and confession to God. When water is poured out, it cannot be gathered up again. Thus confes sion of sin should be entire, with no thought of ever hugging that same sin to our bosom again. Samuel Pearce of Birmingham, be ing in London one weekday evening and not engaged to preach, asked a friend where he could hear a good* ser mon. Mr. S mentioned two places. “Well,” said Mr. Pearce, “ tell me the characters of the preachers, tHat I may choose." “Mr. D,” said his friend, "exhibits the orator, and is much admired for his pulpit eloquence.” “And what is the other?” asked Mr. Pearce. “ I hardly know what to say of Mr. C—he always places himself in the background, and you see his Master only,” the friend replied. “ That is the man for me. Let us go to hear him!” said Mr. Pearce.— One Thousand Acts and Facts, by Hy.
