27 But the children of Belial said. How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace. ---------- 11:12 And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. 13 And Saul said. There shall not a man he put to death this day: for today the Lord hath wrought salvation in Israel. 14 Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. 15 And all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. * ----------- L e s s o n T E X T : . 1 Sam. 9:15-21; 10:25-27: 11:12-15. T he C hoice of S aul (9:15-21) S AUL’S father had lost some of his animals, and in searching for them, Saul came to the city where Samuel lived. As hq neared the place, the Lord told Samuel that here was the man to be anointed as king (vs. 15, 16). This appointment of a king was to answer the desire of the people for a ruler like those of the nations round about them. They wanted to have someone they could see, rather than the unseen God as their leader. Samuel’s humility is to be noted in that he made no ob jection to being superseded by Saul. Saul appeared in a very good light when Samuel told him what the Lord had in mind. He modestly declared that his tribe was the smallest and his family the least in the nation (v. 21). Frequently the “old nature,” or the flesh, appears in a good light as long as it is undisturbed. It is when the new nature comes in that the old is stirred to opposition (cf. Gal. 5:17). n. at Mizpeh and plainly told them they had rejected the Lord from ruling over them by asking for a king. He told them also that in God’s forbearance they should have a king, and then in troduced Saul to them (cf. vs. 17-24). Saul was the best human leader that the Lord could , have chosen for His people, but a human leader for them Was not a part of His best plan. With Saul before them, Samuel de clared unto the people the manner of the kingdom. Whether he read from the law of Moses, or gave the people a new revelation from God, we know not. We do know that he would not reverse what the Lord had spoken through Moses (cf. Deut. 17:14-20). The people were so intent upon hav ing their own way that they would not listen to the warnings. Samuel told them, that their king would so regiment -their lives that the time would come when they would cry out in their misery (cf. 1 Sam. 8:11-18). He also gave strict instructions to the king, with the emphasized word that he should be governed in all things by the Word of God (cf. Deut. 17:14- 20 ) . Having thus introduced Saul to the people, Samuel sent them away to their homes. Saul also returned to his home, accompanied by a band of men who declared their loyalty ’ to him. There was another group, “chil dren of Belial,” or “ base fellows” (Deut. 13:13, R. V.; Judg. 19:22, R.V., etc.), who scorned to accept Saul as their king, professing to distrust his ability to lead them on to victory. Saul’s reaction to this attitude was wisely one of silence. We should re member that these “ base fellows” were not acting with any desire to please the Lord. Being .what they were, they would be against anyone to whom authority over them would be given. m T he I nstallation of S aul ’ (11:12-15) The Ammonites had attacked Ja- besh-gilead and threatened 'to bring the people into bondage. The report was brought to Saul, who at once gathered a force and went to the re lief of Jabesh-gilead, while calling upon the people to follow himself and
