JANUARY 2023

My family has a tradition of skiing on New Year’s morning, which is secretly one of the best times to hit the slopes. People celebrate so wildly on New Year’s Eve that they don’t make it out to ski until the early afternoon, giving us free rein on the slopes for hours on end. I’ve kept this tradition with my kids, as we usually go to Pine Knob on New Year’s Day. It’s been great watching them progress and improve their skills. If we don’t go skiing on New Year’s Day, we try to go bowling on New Year’s Eve. I’m a terrible bowler, but the kids enjoy it, and that’s all that matters! This year, we’re doing something different for New Year’s. My parents usually spend Christmas in Michigan and then head to Florida to spend New Year’s with my sister. We’re going to join them this year. My sister bought a new house there, and the entire family will visit. Even my brother should be there for a few days. It’s always a fantastic time when everyone can get together. We have something special planned for the girls that we kept secret for months leading up to the trip. We’re taking them to Universal Studios to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. They’re going to be so excited! My oldest daughter has seen all the films, and now we’re reading the books together. We should finish the third one by the time we go to Universal. I’ve never read the books before, so reading them for the first time with my daughter is delightful. My youngest also loves the "Harry Potter" movies and has just started reading the first book. It’ll be cool to see their reactions to Universal’s rendition of the Harry Potter world. It’s been years since I’ve been to Universal Studios, and I can’t wait to see how much has changed. I’ve always felt like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios are similar to McDonald’s and Burger King in a competitive aspect. McDonald’s selects their locations carefully, and Burger King says what’s good enough for McDonald’s is good enough for them and builds a location across the street. Disney always seems one step ahead of Universal, and Universal follows Disney’s lead. We’ll see if our visit can change my opinion. Regardless, I’m sure we will make some memories we’ll cherish forever during this trip.

CELEBRATING NEW YEAR’S DAY IN STYLE TRADITIONS, Y2K, AND OUR PLANS FOR THIS YEAR

New Year’s Eve is one of the most anticipated celebrations in our country every year. It’s a day when people can gather with their loved ones, watch the ball drop in Times Square, and contemplate their goals for the next year while reflecting on the past year. In the past, we’ve had some memorable celebrations, but none have caused as much stress and excitement as Y2K, the year that ushered in the new millennium. It’s hard to forget how much angst we all felt in the days leading up to Y2K. For those unfamiliar, people were concerned about Y2K because they feared the two-digit year ‘99–‘00 would cause chaos in computer systems worldwide, impacting essential industries such as banking and transportation. My mom worked as an accountant, and in the years leading up to Y2K, she specialized in upgrading companies’ computers to ensure they were Y2K compliant. My family was well aware of the issues Y2K could cause. We decided to go to my aunt’s remote cottage, the safest place we could think of, in case the computer systems crashed, causing everything to go sideways. We made it through the night without issues, but that didn’t save us from disaster. As we were getting ready to go skiing in the morning, the septic system in my aunt’s cottage backed up, causing everything to come up. It was a nightmare situation I’ll never forget.

We hope you'll have a wonderful start to the new year!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD CERTAIN ITEMS GO TO THE DRY CLEANER?

Winter is in full swing, and you may even see some snow this season! So, while you’re busy making snowmen and snow angels, having snowball fights, and attempting to catch snowflakes on your tongue, make some homemade ice cream. Making your own ice cream from snow is easy, and you may have the rest of the ingredients in your home right now. But before diving in, here are a few tips on how to find and use the best snow to create this icy winter treat! Make Your Own Ice Cream… With Snow! FIND THE CLEANEST SNOW. Snow is generally safe to consume, but there are some exceptions. You don’t want to eat snow touching the soil or the street. So, make sure you scoop from a fresh, clean pile of snow above the layer near the ground. If the snow is colored in any way, such as yellow, black, red, green, or brown, do not scoop or eat it — it’s contaminated. With that bit of advice, you’re now ready to make your very own “snow cream.” GATHER YOUR INGREDIENTS. You only need five simple ingredients to make snow cream. So, look in your home and see if you can find 1 cup of milk, 1/3 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, a pinch of sea salt, and 8 cups of clean, fresh snow. As you collect your ingredients, be sure to leave the snow you’ll be using in the freezer because snow melts fast.

In your closet and throughout your house are items with a label that says “dry clean only.” You see them every time you grab your favorite suits or dresses. You may even see it on your sheets or pillowcases when

you lie down for bed. Those three words might make you clutch your wallet, but concern is not necessary. Not every dry-clean-only item needs to be professionally cleaned after every use. Some can even go months without going to the dry cleaner.

Below, you’ll find the average number of uses an item should get before it needs to be dry-cleaned.

EVERY 1–2 WEARS Items that fit close to your skin, such as button-down dress shirts, day dresses, and blouses, should be dry cleaned every 1–2 wears. These items absorb sweat more than other clothing items, requiring them to be cleaned more often. Formal wear should also be regularly dry-cleaned as they are more fragile than other pieces of clothing and need to look their best every time you wear them. EVERY 3 WEARS Garments that don’t directly touch your skin, like sweaters, can last an extra wear or two before needing to be cleaned. If you wear your dress pants and skirts indoors and hang them up immediately when you get home, you can get three wears out of them before they need dry-cleaning. Business suits should be cleaned every 3–5 wears, depending on how clean the collar, sleeve hems, and elbows are. Make sure you get your whole suit dry cleaned at the same time to prevent uneven fading between pieces. EVERY 6 MONTHS TO A YEAR Throw pillows used for decoration should be cleaned once or twice a year. If your family regularly uses them, they may need to be cleaned more often. Comforters, duvet covers, and bedspreads should be washed weekly and dry-cleaned twice a year. You may need to dry-clean your bedding more often if you have pets who sleep with you. Coats and outdoor jackets only need to be dry-cleaned once a year unless they get dirty or smell musty. Also, consider getting your curtains dry-cleaned once a year since they are exposed to dirt, dust, and odors.

MAKE THE ICE CREAM! Stir together the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt in a large bowl until you get a smooth

mixture. Next, take your fresh snow out of the freezer and immediately add it to the bowl. Mix the

ingredients until you get your desired consistency. You want your ice cream to be fluffy, not runny. Once you get the consistency you want, you can

add your toppings. Get creative by adding sprinkles, chocolate chips, cookie crumbs, or anything else you might enjoy. Be sure to add your toppings quickly before the snow cream melts, and put any extra snow cream in the freezer to keep it frozen.

So, while you’re enjoying all the snow day activities, be sure to make yourself this quick and easy snack as well.

DID YOU JUST GET ENGAGED? We Can Help Clean or Preserve Your Wedding Dress!

According to a survey by WeddingWire, 40% of engagements in our country happen in the short time between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. Christmas, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve are some of the most popular days for couples to get engaged. It makes perfect sense when you think about it. Many people want to get engaged surrounded by their loved ones in a celebratory atmosphere and the holiday season provides the ideal opportunity to do so. If you’re one of those happy couples that just got engaged in the past few weeks, congratulations! You probably aren’t thinking about your wedding dress yet, but know that we’re here to help whenever you need. If you decide to wear a gown that’s been passed down through your family or a used gown, we can get it cleaned so it looks pristine on your big day. We can also preserve your dress after your wedding day if you want to keep it as an heirloom or pass it down so the future generations in your family can wear it for their wedding.

I highly recommend Janet Davis in Berkley. I brought a wedding gown worn by

my grandmother in 1962 and then by my mother in 1988. I wanted to wear it for my wedding in June. Their expert met me and walked

me through the gown, making suggestions. Because it was so delicate, I wore it as is and then trusted their team to clean and preserve the gown after my wedding for my future daughter or daughter-to-be. They took such great care. The gown was cleaned without damaging it further, and they packaged it safely for future use. I'm so grateful!
