N o t long after pioneers entered the West and drove out the Indian, Japanese immigrants began cross­ ing the Pacific Ocean to till the rich loam in the valleys and plains along the Rockies. They raised large families which saluted the Stars and Stripes and subscribed to the Constitution of the United States, but never enjoyed a real place in American life. To most Nisei (Japanese for “ second generation” ), Christianity meant little. It was the white man’s religion and hence not for them. After 75 years of home mission wo rk among America’s 141,768 Japanese (1950 census) two-thirds of them are still Buddhists and a good portion Shintoists. Mission churches that sprang up among them were largely spoon-fed by Caucasian c on g r e g a t i on s which failed to develop in the Nisei the muscles and sinews of self-support. During World War II most Nisei citizens were driven from their homes and shipped to internment camps for the duration of the war — a move that greatly retarded their evangelization. Eight years ago new life sprang up in the ranks of Nisei Christians. A group of 8 Japanese pastors and five ministerial students met for prayer in the redwood-bowered conference grounds of Mt. Hermon, Calif, to plot spiritual warfare to deliver their brethren from pagan faiths, atheism and indifference. These men voted into being the Japanese Evangelical Missionary Society (JEMS), “ a voluntary fel­ lowship of Japanese evangelical Christian pastors and laymen to promote revival, evangelism . . . that through the instrumentality of JEMS Japanese churches will ex­ perience a new anointing of the
