Holy Spirit to meet the appalling spiritual needs of the people.” Paul Nagano, then pastor of the Evergreen Baptist Church in Los Angeles, was chosen first executive secretary of the new society. He formed a deputation team of several young men and laid out an itiner­ ary. Thousands of Nisei heard them and felt the impact of their min­ istry. Everywhere the team trav­ eled, souls were converted and Christians revived. One of the first converts was Alyce Matsumoto of San Francisco. Swept up in the team’s zeal, Alyce dedicated her life to foreign service and became JEMS’ first missionary to Japan. In 1953 Dr. Masumi Toyotome and his family followed Alyce to Japan as JEMS-supported mission­ aries. “Mas” became chaplain and part-time professor at the Interna­ tional Christian U n i v e r s i t y in Tokyo and has been influential in leading scores of Japan’s future leaders to Jesus Christ. Akira Hatori, a n a t i v e - b o r n Japanese educated in the United States, became so burdened for his people he returned home and be­ came an evangelist to rural people. Observing that nearly every Japan­ ese home had a r ad i o , Hatori launched a radio ministry which grew to three programs and now reaches a potential audience of four million people a week, many of them in the darkest regions where other gospel witness is almost nil. Approximately 2500 letters of in­ quiry are mailed to him each month. Seventeen thousand adults are enrolled in his free Bible study course now offered by radio.
