people — even some religious educators—are apt to look down their noses at filmstrips as an inferior substitute for a motion pic ture. And such a half-hearted atti tude is readily t ransmi tted to church school students accustomed to a steady diet of motion on their home television screens. But used skillfully, filmstrips are not only a valuable tool for the teacher but an enjoyable learning experience for the student. Biggest news in religious film strips this fall is that Family Films, producers of religious motion pic tures for the last 10 years, is com memorating its 10th anniversary by entering the field of color film strip production. Their initial of fering includes 40 titles—nine kits, each containing four filmstrips on related subject matter, plus four special Christmas subjects. At the moment I have seen three of these kits: Stories About the Sea sons, for four and five-year-olds; the series entitled Dating, for older teens from 15 to 17 and one group of the Daily Christian Living for Boys and Girls series aimed at 8 to 12-year-olds. Visuals for the first two are in artwork, while the third uses “ live action” color photo graphs taken during the filming of the Our Children motion pictures. Prospective buyers should know that the stories for this third group also parallel the Our Children stories. These filmstrips are all carefully geared to the proper age level and are excellent in content and qual ity. Each one is accompanied by a long-playing record which includes, in addition to the narration for the filmstrip, several suggestions for relevant discussion. Family Filmstrips will be sold

through regular Family Films deal ers, including denominational and other film libraries in all parts of the country. Further particulars may be obtained by writing Fam ily Filmstrips, Inc., 5823 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, Calif. We have already said that skill ful use is indispensable in order that audio-visuals live up to their potential in the learning experi ence. With an eye to encouraging more effective use of these tools of modem communication in the local church, Family Filmstrips has re leased a visualized course of study in one kit containing four film strips, two 12-inch 33 1/3 rpm records, an excerpt from a sound motion picture and instruction manuals. The course deals with the various “whys” and “hows” of using audio-visuals in the church — needed personnel, architectural considerations, storage and main tenance, basic library, and step-by- step techniques by which the indi vidual teachers can improve their use of audio-visuals. Another fine source of current information is He lps -for -the - Month, a quar ter ly published through the cooperative efforts of Religious Producers and available free of charge through leading vis ual aids dealers. It contains arti cles, symposiums, previews of new productions, advertisements and suggested visual aids tied in with the church calendar. And — since we mentioned the local audio-visual dealer—it will be to your advantage to get to know him. He will supply you with literature, put you on his mailing list and let you preview his line of filmstrips. Remember that for good reasons he is every bit as anxious to help you as you are to be helped.
