tetanus -whooping cough shots. From a second-hand store I bought a used fur piece and sewed her a strange fur bonnet. Two snowsuits would keep her body warm, but no designer seemed to fashion hats that would warm both head and neck. We bought Navy parkas and down-filled pants, packed our boxes for shipment and hurriedly stored what possessions we could not mail. We flew from Seattle to Fair banks knowing almost nothing of what we were going into. This we knew: the present missionary and his family would leave in Jan uary and we would be all alone to carry on the mission program and work on an unfinished new church. That gave us less than two months to learn what we needed to know. But God was planning. Though our wool clothes were delayed en route, we flew on to Barrow: we saw a flat, blue-looking world with pin points of light. We settled down into the Arctic on the wannest day of a month—six above zero. Our top-of-the-world comer was small and dark but the light of Jesus was shining in many faces. Wherever our little lamp went- our floor was light and I could clean up the dirt that the darkness hid. He had also turned, and was bending across my flowers to kiss me. We were now man and wife, joined together by God. We wanted our one life to count for God. We were in college then, so we continued our studies. In two years little Frances was bom, only days before George’s graduation. A new thought began to squeeze into our craft classes and Sunday school work. When George took two small churches as lay pastor in the fall of 1950, the thought became a word. How we loved the farm community-pastorate with its near ness to the soil and to God. We could have been happy there per manently. But the Word exploded into an urgent, immediate call. In church we sang: “ It may be in the valley, where countless dangers hide; It may be in the sunshine that I, in peace, abide; But this one thing I know—if it be dark or fair, If Jesus goes with me, I’ll go anywhere!” Yes, anywhere. The call was to Barrow, Alaska. We had seven weeks to get ready—long enough to get a letter back from Barrow describing the heavy clothes we would need. Six-months-old Fran ces was hurried through diptheria-
