us and we sought to bring Life and comfort to these needy people. A house burned and with it a mother, two daughters and a son. A plane crashed, killing pilot and young mother of six but sparing the baby inside her parka on her back. There was a song for this, too; the song that will always take my heart back to Barrow: “Does Jesus care when my heart is pained Too deeply for mirth and song; As the burdens press, and the cares distress, And the way grows weary and long?” The Eskimos were really a joy­ ous, laughing people. They loved to sing, both in their own Inyu- piat (Eskimo dialect) and English. Their favorite was “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder.” They sang a little slow, either to enjoy the tone and rhythm or to geb in all of the Inyupiat syllables. Even the older ladies joined in for, though they knew little English, they dear­ ly loved the Eskimo hymns. Their voices, extremely low, joined oth­ ers higher and more sharp. I be­ gan to join them, trying to pick up the sounds. They watched me, proud parents nodding and smiling at a child’s first words (and just as far from the real words at first): “Nipaukluktauta Jesus nivlikpan pivikrhaigupta Ovlak kausagatakpan isuitcua- mun. Anaurauruat katitchagatakpata ikluanun, Attivut taigukpagit iniaktunga.” Our second girl was born and named for a song. With the only other hospital hundreds of miles away and the local doctor refusing to deliver our baby, I went to a
