A Legacy of Love and Advocacy
Natalie Woodman’s first visit to Sojourner Center was simple but unforgettable—she arrived with bags of lemons and sugar to make lemonade for women and children seeking refuge. That small gesture symbolized something greater: a lifelong dedication to uplifting survivors of abuse. Natalie’s journey began in Long Island, eventually leading her to become a professor and Associate Dean at ASU’s School of Social Work, where she served for 27 years. A passionate advocate for education, justice, and community service, she gave generously of her time and heart—serving on boards, volunteering, and mentoring countless others. Before her passing in 2024, Natalie made one final, powerful gesture: a planned gift to Sojourner Center. Her dear friend Javier Puig, who promised to honor her wishes, said, “Natalie lived to give back. If she were here today, she’d want every survivor to know she’s still holding their hand.” According to Bailey DeRoest, Co-Executive Director of Sojourner Center, Natalie’s legacy is a meaningful example of how lasting impact is made through compassionate action. “Natalie’s story is one of deep meaning and purpose,” said DeRoest. “I hope it inspires others to consider how they too can make a lasting impact on the lives of survivors.” To learn more about planned giving and joining Sojourner Center’s Legacy Society, contact
