National Auctioneers Association Education Institute Trustee Matthew S. Hurley receives the Roy S. F. Angle award for 2018 Business Person of the Year
atthew S. Hurley, founder and presi- dent of Hurley Auc- tions headquartered in Green- castle, Pennsylvania, has been a successful auctioneer, ap- praiser, and broker since 1996. Some boys dream of becoming a policeman or a firefighter when they grow up, but at five years of age, Matt had his sights set on being an auctioneer. Not only did his boyhood dream become a reality, but Hurley’s skill and dedication to his career has allowed him to reach several milestones in his profession. Earlier this year, Matt was M
of the Year which is given to a business leader who exemplifies commitment to the community, avidly supports its organiza- tions and works to make the community a better place. He was also inducted as a National Auctioneers Association Educa- tion Institute Trustee for a 3 year term starting July 2018. Other honors received were the 2016 Auctioneer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Auction- eers Association, Pennsylvania State Champion Auctioneer as well as the highest honor awarded to bid callers in both Pennsylvania’s "Champion of Champions" and Florida’s “Sunshine State Bid Calling Champion”. Hurley’s team has won nu- merous awards on both the State and National level. They recently received three First Place awards in the 2018 Na- tional Auctioneers Association Marketing Competition award- ed by USA Today during the 69th International Conference & Show in Jacksonville, Florida for Recreational Real Estate, Development Land, as well as Personal Property-Antiques & Collectibles. Matt was also fea- tured on the April 2018 cover of NAAMagazine for the National Auctioneer’s Association. Hurley Auctions celebrated it’s 25th year in business this past June. When Matt started the business in 1993, he ran it from his summer kitchen off Route 997 in Quincy, PA. With- out an auction house to operate from, all sales were conducted out of a rented warehouse in the former Tomstown Community Center. He even got his mother and father hooked on auction- eering. Barb received her auc- tioneers apprentice license in 2001. Gene apprenticed under Matt from 1996 to 1998, and remains an active auctioneer in Hurley Auctions to this day. All six of Hurley's children are also involved in the business today. In 2017 Kaleb Hurley received his Pennsylvania Auctioneers license beginning the third generation of auctioneers in the Hurley Family Hurley currently specializes in Real Estate and Personal Property Auctions, Farms and Land, High End Recreational Facilities, Corporate & Busi- ness Wholesale and Retail Liquidations, Luxury & Estate Homes, Bankruptcies, as well as Appraisals & Consulting services throughout the US and Canada.
