How Locals Can Act Like Tourists in Chicago

HOW TO BE A TOURIST IN YOUR HOMETOWN

Gaining a New Appreciation for the City

Create a trip itinerary. This doesn’t have to be a full day’s worth of activities, but the mere act of scheduling a visit to a new restaurant, a historical tour, or just a walk around a new neighborhood will make it more likely you’ll actually do it rather than just put it off for later. Stay somewhere other than your house. Whether it’s a hotel or an Airbnb, sleeping somewhere in your hometown that isn’t, well, your home, can allow you to see your city in a whole new light — kind of like rearranging the furniture in your living room. Plus, if you’re in an unfamiliar neighborhood, you might find your new favorite shop or eatery! Take a historic tour. What do you really know about Chicago’s history? While it might be easy to paint in broad strokes, the city offers plenty of tours (some delightfully esoteric) to teach you some specifics. Learn about Chicago’s historic criminal underbelly in the “Gangsters and Ghosts” tour, or marvel at the skyline from a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour. If it will help you appreciate this city all the more, then you really can’t go wrong!

It’s no secret that Chicago boasts a wealth of sightseeing opportunities unique from any other city in America. That’s why millions of people visit the Windy City every year to see the Cloud Gate (aka “The Bean”) in Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Willis Tower, and countless other attractions.

As is the case for anyone who lives in a city popular with tourists, however, it’s easy to just go about your day without taking advantage of the incredible sights Chicago has to offer. With many people wary of traveling, now is a great time for you, the locals, to explore your city like a tourist. Does this mean going to all the places a tourist might visit? Not necessarily. However, it can mean exploring new parts of the city you’ve never visited to gain a deeper appreciation for the community you call home. So, if you’re curious about how to be a tourist in your hometown, check out these tips.
