2024 RETIRING PROGRAM CHAIRS
Martha J. Mullen served as Co-Chair of the Annual Municipal Law Institute for 22 years. She recently retired from her position as Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Litigation Division for the District of Columbia’s Office of the Attorney General. She had been with the office for 27 years, during which time she litigated major class actions and a broad range of claims.

Douglas R. Nemec served as Co-Chair of the Annual Patent Law Institute from its creation in 2006 until his retirement in 2023. A partner at Skadden, he has litigated numerous intellectual property cases in a wide range of technologies, from pharmaceuticals and other chemicals to IT and electronics. He has experience in life science matters, including patent litigation under the Hatch-Waxman Act, and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Martin D. Polevoy served as Chair of the Negotiating Real Estate Deals program for over 20 years before retiring from DLA Piper as a partner in 2024. In addition to PLI, he has been a frequent participant as a Program Chair and as a speaker and panelist and has written extensively on various aspects of real estate law. He has represented national and international owners, developers, investors, and financial institutions, as well as European and Asian investors, in both debt and equity transactions in the United States.
Sara L. Shudofsky served as Co-Chair of the Fair Housing Law and Practice program since its creation in 2019. Sara retired from her position as partner with Arnold & Porter, where she represented clients in a wide range of government investigations and commercial suits. Prior to joining Arnold & Porter, Sara was the Chief of the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Charlotte A. Watson served as Co-Chair of the Addressing Domestic Violence program from 2019 to 2024 and played a key role in the program’s development prior to becoming Co-Chair. Before her retirement in 2024, she served as Executive Director of the Hon. Betty Weinberg Ellerin Committee on Women in the Courts. Charlotte brought to her work over 45 years of leadership experience in addressing violent crimes against women.
