2024 RETIRING AUTHORS

PLI thanks these esteemed authors for their thought leadership and generous contributions to the profession.

Barry M. Kaplan was the co-author of Directors’ and Officers’ Liability: Current Law, Recent Developments, Emerging Issues since 2015. Now retired, Barry was a partner and head of the Northwest Litigation Group at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. For 30 years, Barry represented many of the public companies and individuals sued in shareholder class actions and related corporate litigation. He has spoken at PLI programs on securities litigation and taught courses on related topics at the University of Washington School of Law.

Hon. Robert D. Sack was the founding author of Sack on Defamation: Libel, Slander, and Related Problems, first published in 1980 and now in its Fifth Edition. During his 33 years in practice, he specialized in national and international press law. He was a frequent lecturer and writer on press law topics and was a speaker on the Communications Law programs from their inception in 1973. He was co-author, with P. Cameron DeVore, of Advertising and Commercial Speech: A First Amendment Guide (PLI 1999). Since 1998 he has been a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, taking senior status in 2009. In addition to serving on numerous boards, he has been a Lecturer in Law and Adjunct Professor at Columbia Law School since 2001.

David A. Westenberg was the founding author of Initial Public Offerings: A Practical Guide to Going Public, first published in 2009. Now retired, he was a partner in the Corporate Practice Group and the Capital Markets Group of WilmerHale, where he focused on the software, internet, and information technology industries for more than 20 years, guiding numerous startup clients from formation through venture financing and on to successful acquisitions or IPOs.
