Love Inc. to Love INC
Have you ever heard Love INC referred to as Love Incorporated? You may not know, originally Love Inc. was our name! The name changed when our founder, Virgil Gulker, was in Fresno, CA, in the early 1980s. At a vision casting meeting, Alan Doswald introduced Virgil as the leader of Love Inc., but then added “In the Name of Christ.” It wasn’t a planned change; it was spontaneous. “It stuck,” Virgil recalls, “and without any sort of branding campaign, it spread.” In the Name of Christ was eventually incorporated into our mission statement, and serves as an ongoing reminder of our purpose, strength, and approach to ministry. Claiming Christ is vital for us as we engage in ministry. If our mission is Christ’s mission, His authority, power, and strength is ours. By claiming His name, we invoke and should be reminded of His support and backing as we live into His purposes. Sometimes we feel alone - we are not (Deut. 31:6). Sometimes discouragement seems to be carrying the day - He’s ready to carry the load (1 Peter 5:7). Sometimes weariness makes that next task seem impossible - all things are possible through Him according to His purposes (Romans 8:28, Eph. 3:20). In the Name of Christ also impacts our approach, or the "how". Representing Christ is a high calling. Christ demonstrated how to love people by His words and actions. Christ’s love moves towards, rather than away. Christ’s love listens, it respects, it enters messy and difficult situations. Christ’s love returns after being pushed away. It’s concerned about all aspects of a person’s life: spiritual, material, emotional, mental, and relational. Christ’s love is not transactional, but transformational. Christ’s love calls for unity among believers. Our namesake is a filter to help us make decisions about things like partner relationships, policies, programs, and strings attached to money. Our namesake calls us to lead and encourage volunteers and churches to bring Christ into conversations, offer prayer, and spiritually encourage people. When our name went from Inc. to INC (In the Name of Christ), it was an identity statement of our reason for existing, the means by which we will carry-on, and the manner in how we live out ministry mobilizing local churches to transform lives and communities In the Name of Christ.
