CLARENCE-ROCKLAND | It was a good day for both Rockland District High School and St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School at the Prescott-Russell High School Track and Field Championships. “It was pretty solid,” said Coach Ryan Wil- kes of Rockland District High School (RDHS). “We won more events than other schools.” “We had a good meet,” said Coach Scott Stoqua of Hammond’s St. Francis Xavier (SFX). “It was our biggest team yet.” RDHS proved the Big Team at the meet with first-place overall among competing schools and 25 of its athletes making the top four placings in their events, which qualifies them to go on to the Eastern On- tario Secondary School Athletics Associa- tion (EOSSAA) championships in Brockville this month. “Every student we took qualified for EOS- SAA,” said Coach Wilkes, “and I’d say that we have four or five athletes who stand a chance of going to OFSA.” Wilkes cited Tanner Van Every as one RDHS track star to watch at EOSSAA after his performance in the 100-metre hurdles, high jump, and triple jump at the PR Cham- pionships. “He won all of his events.” Senior athlete Matt Rossi is another pos-

ORLÉANS | There was celebration at the Tumblers gymnastics centre. Six members of the athletics club landed Eastern Canadian championship titles over the May 12 weekend in Oshawa. “Competition is all about the ability to handle the nerves and perform your best at the right time,” said Coach Alina Florea. “The main goal for each athlete at competition is to do what they’re doing in practice. They did that this weekend.” Juliette Chapman and Avery Rosales fin- ished first and second, in that order, to lead the four-member Team Ontario squad to first-place overall in the Canadian Pre-Nov- ice division and the Eastern Canadian team championship title. Rosales won herself champion status with first on the balance beam plus a second- place finish in floor exercise and a third on

Senior soccer Rockland United Soccer Club is not just for the young and agile. The club is looking to draft some older athletes onto local soc- cer fields. RUSC has a summer adult soccer program in play now. Details on the program, and a refresher course on the game, are available on a special Facebook page.
