S o m e t h ir t y years ago Professor H.S. Jennings of the Johns Hopkins University was said to be “ the first actually to see and control the process of evolution among living things.” He worked with microscopic organisms, one of which was a species of Difflugia which ornaments its little shelter with small projections. Starting with a single individual and selecting de scendants which made more of these projections and also selecting those which made fewer, he was able to ob tain strains which consistently made more of them than other strains did. But none of these little animals was further along toward becoming a higher form of life than was the one with which the research began. Demerec found in some of his bacteria cultures individuals which were not killed by streptomycin, and these produced more bacteria with the same immunity. Similarly, the now familiar phenomenon of insects de veloping a resistance to insecticides has been hailed as evolution going on before our eyes. In a recent article Dr. H.B.D. Ket- tlewell of Oxford University states his belief that there were just two funda mental gaps in the chain of evidence which Charles Darwin presented for the theory of evolution. He believes both of them have since been filled, and thus implies that the evidence for evolution is now complete. One of these gaps was the lack of an ex ample of evolution in action. To fill the gap he'cites as an example the increase of dark moths in areas sub ject to industrial pollutions. While the moths are resting during the day time in trees which are darkened by industrial pollutants, the darker moths are not as easily seen by birds as are lighter moths of the same species. Hence the birds eat a larger propor tion of the lighter moths and the dark ones become more numerous. He says that if this had been brought to Darwin’s attention, “He would have witnessed the consummation and con firmation of his life’s work.” This seems ridiculous but evolutionists to day, for lack of something better, are saying that just such smajil changes

have brought about an evolution of all life from the very simplest be ginnings. Julian Huxley sums it up by saying that the survival value of the best of such changes as they occur in animals and plants converts blind chance into apparent purpose, pro ducing results that have a more than astronomical improbability. To those who are not prejudiced it would seem that changes of these sorts 'would never transform a fish into a horse or a tree shrew into a human being. But the word evolution is fre quently used in biological literature to refer to practically any heredi tary change in an organism, and thus whether or not evolution is going on may depend on one’s meaning in the word evolution. The men who know most about these things and yet ascribe the origin of the various forms of life to evolu tion are men of great faith, though it is very different from Christian faith. Writing about the theory of evolution, Professor J. Arthur Thomp son once put it this way: “ It stands more firmly than ever, except that we are more keenly aware than in Dar win’s day of our ignorance as to the origin and affiliation of the great classes. But, frankly, the only scien tific way of looking at the present- day fauna and flora is to regard them as the outcome of a natural selection.” This is indeed a frank admission of ignorance and faith. It is as though and orphan said, “ I am more certain than ever about my ancestry except that I realize more keenly than before that I am ignorant of my par entage and who my other relatives are.” (To continue the analogy fur ther, one would need to let the orphan represent the human race.) As most scientists reject revelation and since the scientific method does not apply, they accept evolution on faith. On the other hand, the Christian accepts revelation and, by faith, believes in creation. “ How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out.” “ All things were made by Him and without Him was not any thing made that was made.”
