family. Former desires and pleasures are gone. It is something deep and permanent that happens to a person. The change that takes place is espe cially noticeable to the person him self. Believe me, it soon becomes evi dent to others as well. No capable counsellor is happy or satisfied until he knows that the per son has the most thrilling experience of man —- assurance of salvation. Nothing short of this is adequate. Best of all, this experience God has pro vided. It is the promised portion of the believer. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the chil dren of God. Romans 8:16 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. John 10:28.
Repentance is a turning away with sorrow and disgust from all of those pleasureable sins. There is also the matter of believing that God is ready to forgive the past. (To blot out the sin and bury it in the sea of God’s forgetfulness). The real hurdle is, does He do it? Does He do it with my sins? Does He do it now? If the con ditions are met, He will forgive. The basic conditions are: come to Him. “Whosoever cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37. God guarantees in His Word that He will do this. A man hurries into an inquiry room. A look of deep anxiety is on his face. The reality that he is not a child of God suddenly grips him. He is fearful that he might be too late. A counsellor shows him from the Bible that God promises to receive him and give him certainty of eternal life. As he leaves, he says to the counsellor, “ Although I have been a church mem ber for fifty years, I have carried a burden of sin and insecurity all these years.” He joyfully adds, “ But now it is gone.” Having eternal life is more than assurance of God’s approval and sins forgiven. Actually, it is having your life completely re-created. The child of God is in reality a new person. Now he has eternal life. He is one of God’s

There is a very personal side to it, not general, but specific. A person who has come into a right relationship with God has a deep inner assurance of its reality. It is as real as life itself. There are difficulties to overcome in arriving at this assurance. There can be no compromising or covering up of sin. All sins of the past life must be faced before God. There must be an attitude of rejection to all allurement and pleasure of past sins. Even the Bible speaks of the pleasures of sin.
