sage. To add some interest to the eve- i ning program, it is always good to have a small vocal group present a selection . . .either a male quartet, girls’ trio or duet. The evening serv ice is the time to use the instrumental talent of the church. It must be well rehearsed and should be a combina tion of instruments that can be en joyed by the congregation. This could be a trumpet trio, a string group, or an instrumental soloist. Then, of course, the highest point of the eve ning should be the choir presentation. This could be a medley of gospel songs or a special arrangement of some favorite hymn tune, but, whatever it is, it must be well prepared and pre sented with enthusiasm and interest. Too often I have seen the evening choir presentation looked upon as “ throw aways.” It doesn’t really mat ter; it is not a piece of great music — so why rehearse it! But when the choir and the music director fail to place a premium upon the selection presented in the evening service, the feeling is projected to the audience. In closing I have a brief comment to make regarding music committees. There is not too much difference, geographically speaking, in placing your hand upon the head of your music director in approval or in chok ing your fist around his neck in an initiative-killing strangle hold. But the difference is sufficient to spell failure or success in a local church music program. A music committee should be sovereign only when the church is without a music director. At that time they should take steps to secure a man to whom they can en trust the musical well being of the church. When they have found him, then he becomes sovereign and they should work under him. When the1 time comes that a music director’s ministry in a local church situation is completed, the majority opinion of the music committee can assert itself to make the necessary changes. How ever, this should not be instigated as a threat so that the minister of music is brought into the subservience of one or two dominating personalities on the music committee. However, I must hasten to say that any difficulties between committee and music director are not always the fault of the com mittee. A wise director will learn to work with his committee. This was difficult for me to do but now I see the great value. Music, its use and the people who make it, is a very important part of the church. The congregation blessed with a strong musical program has reason to.rejoice. END
