• Check the material to be collected. It must be as described on delivery/collection ticket. Any difference in material must be notified to the transport office prior to loading, including if the material looks to contain any hazardous elements such as asbestos, liquids or electrical items. • The vehicle must be positioned as close to the Skip to be loaded as reasonably practical, to avoid overreach and potential instability of the vehicle. • Full PPE must be worn at all times when on site, out of the vehicle or operating equipment. This must include Hi Viz tops, safety boots and gloves. Boots must be securely fastened. When sheeting/un-sheeting or tipping staff are required to wear hard hats. • If the site rules require additional PPE then drivers must adhere to this but never a lower standard than that of our own procedures. • Prior to loading the driver must ensure the skip is secure, all doors and hatches must be closed and secured in position. The load area must be clear, and any sheeting systems are retracted. The general condition of skip must also be observed. • Vehicles should not be within 2 metres of any exposed edge or excavation. • Sheeting systems only to be operated once the overhead area is checked for obstructions and the vehicle is stationary.
Note: The site representative and transport office must be informed of any concerns regarding potential damage or risk to public or personal safety before starting work.
3. Loading
Safe working limits of the vehicle must be adhered to at all times. In the event of an alarm sounding or warning light illuminating then stop work, assess why, and comply accordingly. All loads must be sheeted and secured with the onboard sheeting system or manual net. If manually sheeting then this must be done from ground level. Under no circumstances is a vehicle to leave site overloaded. • No operation of loading or vehicle operation should take place within 5 meters of another person. In case of mechanical failure or vehicle overturn. • Ensure that the vehicles hazard lights and beacons are turned on. • Position in line with the Skip to be loaded. • Position pads on the ground and lower stabilising legs. These can be wooden boards. Adjust the legs and pads as necessary to level the vehicle to prevent the skip swinging. • Check the area prior to operation/lifting. • No person should be on/in contact with the vehicle or in the immediate area during operation other than the driver. • Extend the arms over the skip • Using the large hooks connect the chains to the skip lugs • Take the tension on the chains so all four are under tension. • Check connection security of all four chains before commencing the lift. • Lift up/in onto the back of the vehicle into a centrally located position on the vehicle. • Retract the stabilising legs and stow pads securely.
