Checks must be completed on hardstanding prior to joining the public road. Any defects found must be logged in accordance with the companies operating procedures. Any safety related defects must be recorded, and the vehicle removed from service immediately. Along with the vehicle checks the driver must also include checks as follows: • All lifting equipment and associated parts • Full function of the lifting equipment must be tested both pre and post use along with any warnings for incorrect stowage of body or overload.

• Equipment must be checked for condition, cleanliness, and security. • Equipment must be maintained as per any maintenance schedule.

2. Assessment of site/working area prior to tipping or loading/unloading

On arrival to site, a full and thorough assessment of the area must be made.

• Ensure there are no overhead power cables in the area. Identify goal posts, barriers, and warning signs. Under no circumstances must the vehicle be operated or loaded/tipped within 10 metres of any overhead power cables. • Ensure the ground condition is level, firm & stable. Observations must be made of any sub surface or surface obstructions such as utility holes, drainage, or surface power cables. Also, potential damage to tarmac and paving must be considered. • Ensure all other persons and vehicles are clear of the rear of the vehicle and its fall-over area (10 metres). • If working by the side of the road or by footpaths, the area must be fully coned off and supervised by a traffic/pedestrian marshal. • Weather must be taken into consideration. In Icy conditions it may not be safe to operate. In high winds any material loaded could be blown into pedestrians or traffic. • Check the material to be collected. It must be as described on collection ticket. Any difference in material must be notified to the transport office prior to loading, including if the material looks to contain any hazardous elements such as asbestos. If in doubt do not remove the container from site. • For loading and transportation of any hazardous loads, full PPE relevant to the task must be worn and potentially disposed of after use.
