The Elizabeth Hospice 2019-2020 Impact Report

from our President & Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends,

This was a year of many unusual twists and turns, a year unlike any other in our organization’s history. Throughout this demanding time, our commitment to providing the highest quality hospice care, palliative care and grief support services to the people in our community was stronger than ever. We agilely modified our practices and protocols to conform to the COVID-19 health guidelines established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and local public health agencies. Our staff members unselfishly focused their energies and attention on serving our community. When in-person visits were severely limited, our care teams, grief counselors, and volunteers utilized technology to attend to their patients and clients. I am so proud of their dedication to caring for adults and children who were facing the challenges associated with a life-limiting illness and those who were grieving the death of a loved one. This year also brought a leadership change. Jan Jones, RN, BSN, announced her retirement after serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of The Elizabeth Hospice for eight years. In this role, Jan established the most comprehensive offering of children’s bereavement services in San Diego County, created an adult palliative care program and broadened our organization’s service area to encompass all of San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County. We are grateful to Jan for all that she accomplished and wish her the best in the years ahead. I am honored to be assuming this leadership role and to developing strategies and programs that enhance the quality of life for those nearing the end of life’s journey and for those who grieve. On behalf of our Board of Directors and staff, I want to thank the community for its generosity and support this past year. Together we ensured that children and adults have access to an experienced resource they can rely on for guidance and support when confronted with serious illness and grief. We are deeply grateful for the honor of caring for those who need our services.

With gratitude,

Sarah McSpadden, RN, MSN, MHA President & Chief Executive Officer
