E xperiential group therapy is a treatment modality that helps clients come to better understand the mind-body connection as it relates to recovery from addiction and mental illness. Originally developed in the 1970s, experiential therapy is a vital alternative to traditional forms of talk therapy. Experiential therapy uses actions, movements, and creativity to access underlying issues. As a treatment approach, experiential therapy often resonates with clients who do not respond to more passive therapeutic modalities In experiential therapy, clients engage in role-playing exercises, guided imagery exercises, exercises using props, and movement-based exercises in order to unearth and address hidden or subconscious thoughts and feelings. Clients who participate in experiential therapy groups at Wellness Resource Center benefit because of the focus on action, and they are not as acutely aware and self-conscious about being in therapy. Under the careful guidance and supervision of our experiential therapist, clients are able to let their guard down, identify obstacles to their recovery, take responsibility for their actions, and
grow their sense of personal empowerment. As an integrated therapy, experiential group therapy is valuable tool for processing grief and loss, trauma, family-of-origin issues, and other difficult emotions and issues often associated with addiction.
