O ur therapeutic team of addiction specialists incorporate dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) concepts into Wellness Resource Center’s overall clinical system and therapeutic philosophy. DBT is a treatment approach that uses cognitive and behavioral therapies to teach people to express and cope with their emotions in a positive way. Rather than turning to substance abuse or other destructive behaviors to manage difficult emotions in a maladaptive fashion, the therapists at Wellness Resource Center teach our clients to use skills like mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness to deal with emotional dysregulation in a constructive manner. DBT encourages people to use healthy distractions, such as conscious breathing, listening to music, or meditation in order to deepen their self-awareness and gain emotional clarity. By learning to face difficult emotions rather than turning to destructive behaviors like drinking or drug abuse, clients learn to regulate themselves effectively. DBT teaches people to honestly and calmly communicate their feelings and needs, while taking into consideration other people’s interests and needs as well.
