Phenomenal Growth of Mormonism U n d e r “ R e l ig io n ” in Time maga zine for Dec. 21, 1962 appears an article on “The Ninth Prophet” from which we quote the following with Time’s permission: “The President, Prophet, Seer, Revelator and Trustee-in-Trust of the Mormons — as the ‘peculiar peo ple’ call their leader — is the ‘living oracle of God to whom the Lord re veals whatever is necessary for the conduct of the church.’ Last week in Salt Lake City, nearly 500 business and civic leaders, representing Juda ism and a dozen Christian churches, gathered at a testimonial banquet, honoring the ninth man in Mormon history to be in direct communica tion with God.” The article goes on to describe David 0. McKay, and after quoting tributes from a Jewish business man and a Catholic priest, further states: “He has also relaxed a few of the stiff rules that govern the life of his followers. New converts, for exam ple, no longer have to give up smok ing. . . . Nearly one-third of the world’s 1,800,000 Latter-Day Saints have been baptized since McKay be came president in 1951. Much of the growth stems directly from policy decisions he made shortly after tak ing office. He abandoned the church tradition of urging converts to set tle in Utah. . . . He authorized the construction abroad of new temples — previously limited to the U.S. and Canada — when membership growth warranted. “McKay’s policies have paid off: since 1951, the number of stakes (dioceses) have risen steadily from 17,000 to more than 100,000 in 1962. Mormons now open one new chapel a week and are in the midst of a vast building program that includes a 30- to 40-floor skyscraper on Man hattan's 58th Street, a new 25-story office building in Salt Lake City.” (End of Time article.) The lives of the Mormon Prophets may have improved since the days of the polygamous F irst and Second Prophets, Joseph Smith, and Brig ham Young, but the doctrines are as unscriptural and heretical as ever and can only lead men and women into darkness and despair.
