B Y A L T H E A S . M I L L E R “T|? very t im e I come to y o u r desk -IL' I find you writing. You like to write. That must be your hobby. My hobby is reading.” This bit of obser vation came from nine-year-old Mark, hands on hips as he stood beside me. “Now Mama, see if you can find a verse to go with what Mark just said.” Ardyth had to add her two- cents-worth. How could an 11-year- old do otherwise? “Don’t worry, Missy. Mama can find either a Bible verse or a poem or a song to fit anything. I learned that long ago.” Did Althea intend this contribution to the conversation as a compliment? Sometimes the 13- year-old is inscrutable. But no matter, —Mother giggled quietly as she re flected on the truth, “a prophet is not without honor save in his own country.” She also thought about the work a hobby entails. Yet it is not work, at least for this mother, when she is writing. How her heart literally yearns to get at a book which has been “simmering” in her plans and thinking, lo, these many years. Her failure to experience fulfillment in this area can be laid in part, at least, to the “small” matter of rearing nine children. However, “this too, shall pass.” A young man once wrote to his father, “At last I am in the work which I was born to do.” So some day, dear children of mine, your Mother’s hobby will no longer be an unsatisfied yearning. Please God, it will be fulfillment; that “which I was bom to do.” As for that Bible verse, Ardyth, how does this fit? “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Col. 3 :1 7 ). And the song, Althea? “My life, my love, I give to Thee, Thou Lamb of God who died for me . . Will you join me in singing it, daughter dear?
