ART AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

The Southwark Schools’ Learning Partnership collaborative photography workshop took 20 keen pupils on an exciting learning experience designed to ignite their passion for photography. Art Society kicked off this year with a captivating talk by the art dealer and entrepreneur Harry Blain.

On 22 June 1948, a historic boat – the HMT Empire Windrush – arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex after its long journey across the Atlantic Ocean from Jamaica, carrying 1,027 passengers from the Caribbean and neighbouring countries who wanted to build a life in Britain. The arrival of this iconic ship marks the beginning of a transformative era in our history. Whilst the HMT Empire Windrush was just one of many ships that brought individuals from the Caribbean to the UK, it has become a symbol of a migration movement that triggered a wave of cultural exchange and diversity which continues to shape our society today. The legacy of the Windrush generation is woven into the very fabric of our communities. From arts and music to politics and sport, the generation’s contributions have left an indelible mark, enriching every facet of British life. Theirs is a legacy of strength, determination, resilience and triumph over adversity. During this year’s Dulwich College Black History Month, we celebrated the spirit of the Windrush generation, embracing their journey as a testament to the power of unity, diversity and the formidable human spirit. There was a wide array of events happening in and around the College, including an art exhibition, film screenings and visiting speakers.
