In the leadup to the celebration of the 2020 National Travel and Tourism Week, U.S. Travel reminds us: “Through every crisis in our nation’s history, it’s the spirit of travel that moves America forward. Rebuilding our economy, growing our workforce, connecting our communities, boosting our morale, inspiring our dreams, turning strangers into friends, inviting others to take a step toward brighter days.” When the time is right, the travel and tourism industry will be integral to our nation’s recovery—for the economy and American jobs. But it is the spirit of travel that will heal our country’s morale. Industry insiders are cautiously optimistic that a new type of traveler will emerge in the early days of the economic recovery following the crisis. It is likely that domestic travelers will be wary of international travel, cruises and big-city destinations such as Las Vegas and New York City. In their search for a feeling of safety and security, travelers will turn to rural America, wide open spaces and the freedom and isolation of the road trip.
Rural America has always been an authentic destination, filled with friendly, welcoming people and a culture and history that resonates with travelers from across the world. The same human connection that binds our communities together serves as a reminder to travelers of what is truly important – relationships, kindness, support, and a sharing of one another’s burdens when times are hard.
