“3 November to 3 December is National Disability Rights Awareness Month”

Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is the Minister of the Department of Women, Youth, and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD). As one of the main stakeholders steering the coordination and institutionalisation of the NSP across government and society at large, the department mainstreams empowerment programmes for women, youth, and persons with disabilities. Through various programmes, the DWYPD ensures that the socioe-conomic empowerment and the rights of women, youth, and persons with disabilities are mainstreamed across all sectors of society. This is done by monitoring the extent to which their social and economic circumstances are significantly improved; promoting, and advocating for and monitoring their empowerment and gender equality and promoting the understanding of their differential circumstances in society. Furthermore the impact of seemingly neutral decisions, plans, laws, policies, and practices on them is monitored and mitigated through capacity building and responsive budgeting; and facilitating and skills development for them to participate meaningfully in all areas of the economy and the workplace.
