Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI)
Elizabeth Dartnall Executive Director - SVRI South Africa
The Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI) is the world’s largest research network focused on violence against women and children in low- and middle- income countries. In September 2022 the SVRI held its 7th annual forum in Cancun, Mexico, convening well over 1000 roleplayers in the global sexual and gender-based violence response sector. The forum’s function is to create a platform for roleplayers in the sector, particularly researchers, programme designers, funders, practitioners, policymakers, activists, and survivors, to connect, learn and share knowledge. The forum also provides an opportunity to learn about the newest innovations for prevention and response to gender-based violence in low- and middle-income countries and to meet some of the most influential researchers and practitioners in the fields of violence against women and children.
The network is built on four strategies that aim to: 1.
Create evidence-based innovations tested through robust research designs that prevent and improve response to violence against women and children. Strengthen capacity by increasing the number of researchers from low-income countries that are doing impactful research in the space. Promote partnerships that encourage the co- creation of knowledge that can be used to influence change through policy implementation and programmes. Influence change by mobilising funding to effect change.
