Resilience is your ability to bounce back. Develop it by learning from your experiences, finding meaning again in what you do, and being proactive about the ABCs above. Self-mastery by connecting with one of our coaches at Camber Coaching who will help you with a toolbox of skills to deal with your particular challenge around compassion fatigue. Fostering a post-trauma-growth mindset, it is interesting to learn that more people encounter post-trauma growth than PTSD, the possibility is there. DON’T self-medicate with drugs or alcohol or other self-defeating coping mechanisms.. Get professional help if needed to get you back on track. Unrecognised and untreated compassion fatigue causes people to leave their profession, fall into addictions, or in extreme cases become self-destructive or suicidal (5). If, like the person at the GBVF meeting I had attended, you are “empty and need help”, know that help is available. As an SJHR community, you are indeed one of this world’s most precious resources, tackling some of the most difficult of problems. You are also extremely at risk of burnout and compassion fatigue. So put on your oxygen mask, and take care of yourself too by applying the ABCD prevention practices discussed, so that you can keep helping others and the causes you are involved in. This world needs you.
