INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE UNDERMINES WOMEN’S ECONOMIC POWER
By Thabo Motshweni MA Candidate , Department of Sociology, University of Johannesburg
The prevalence of violence against women has been identified as a significant public health issue gaining international recognition. Violence against women (VAW) is one of the most common types of all violence. This has been referred to as a socio-cultural and economic crisis. The lack of empirical data regarding the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) in rural areas is one of the main factors contributing to the statistical underreporting of this issue. The unwillingness of victims to report abuse is complicated by a combination of factors, such as being accused of lying or being judged. In my 2020 study of the factors contributing to intimate partner violence in rural areas, I reviewed 10 independent qualitative studies on the subject. This review produced a summary of the four most frequently cited factors which contribute to IPV in rural areas in South Africa.
