“Dear Mr. President” is an open letter addressed to Cyril Ramaphosa in the form of a hand embroidered artwork created by craftivist and embroiderer Nell-Louise Pollock, a rape survivor. ARTIST STATEMENT BY NELL-LOUISE POLLOCK Written by Stacey Rozen She uses craftivism (handicrafts + activism) to protest the continued escalation of GBV in South Africa. Her call to action implores President Ramaphosa to urgently put measures in place to end violence against womxn. The statistic of 1:3 raped/violated in their lifetimes is abhorrent. Nell-Louise began creating this artwork in Cape Town on the first day of the 16 Days of Activism campaign on 25 Nov 2021. She will complete it on 25 November 2022, one year later. Her intention is to create awareness, gently activate protest through craftivism, and demand change. “With each stitch, I remember and honour each victim. They are not simply a statistical number in this violent GBV war. Through the medium of embroidery, I am mending threads to heal myself, other victims, their loved ones, and our country.”
