AFRI-TEC SOS ALERT APP

The Empire Partner Foundation is a non-profit Tech Hub started by young South Africans in response to the need for tech solutions to 10 identified challenges which include: water, energy, healthcare, education, agriculture, housing, unemployment, rural safety and security, and transport. Concerned about the level of safety and security for GBVF victims, the young minds came together, coded, and soon came up with a solution to develop an app for use in emergency situations. This community-based app is called AFRI-TEC SOS Mobile Alert App.

WHY WE DEVELOPED THE APP

As its common cause, technology has certainly revolutionised so many aspects of our life and the use of such technology has been accelerated during covid. We felt that as a tech-focused collaboration, we wanted to create a technological platform that would assist in empowering victims in terms of alerting those they trust when they are in need. Technology has the ability to upscale and provide efficiencies that were not available in the past.

South Africa has a 92% penetration of smartphones throughout the country.

SOS ALERT

HOW IT WORKS Effectively the app platform enables an individual to alert their invited trusted circle in a panic/gender-based violence situation. Their circle can consist of an infinite number of people that they choose to invite who will immediately be alerted of their panic through push notifications, other messaging as well as the details of their live location and other information that they have provided including their medical information. All this information enables the trusted circle to immediately act upon assisting the victim by driving to them and sharing their location with someone who can then assist them. In essence, in an instant, an infinite number of people can be alerted of a victim's predicament, which we believe to be a game changer.
