A COMMUNITY CANVAS MURALS IN VERMILLION “Art has so much more power on people than we think,” said Mural On The Wall (Mural OTW) co-lead Ihaŋkṫoŋwaŋ painter Reyna Hernandez .

Mural making isn’t a solo process—it’s communal and resides in the very streets on the walls of the community, Hernandez adds.

"ART IS INNATELY A PART OF WHO WE ARE. "

Mural OTW, an organization that evolved from Vermillion Community Mural Project (VCMP) , a subsidiary of the Vermillion Cultural Association (VCA), helps lead, facilitate, and curate the community-based process of creating murals, not just in Vermillion, but any community in need of public art. “Diversity is such a huge thing in Vermillion with ( University of South Dakota ), and the townies really embrace diversity and diverse stories,” said Hernandez. “That's what public art and mural making can do for a place, especially if you're consulting with people who are living there, which is what our process does.”

Mural OTW and the VCA are organizations the Vermillion Area Chamber and Development Company (VCDC) aims to uplift, communications and tourism manager Miles Amende says. “The VCDC’s mission is connecting businesses growing in the Vermilion area and being a leader in Vermilion in terms of development, and so when it comes to the arts in the community, the mission is sort of twofold,” said Amende. The intersection between the arts, a thriving culture, and a community’s economic development cannot be ignored, and are an intrinsic part of improving quality of life, he added. “Vermilion has been very open to the idea of community-based public mural making and has embraced that process,” said co-lead artist of Mural OTW Amber Hansen . “People have shown up to help imagine the murals, offering stories and ideas, and they’ve also shown up to help raise funds and paint.”

“This community has been really open and welcoming, and it's one of our favorite places to paint,” continued Hansen. The mural-making process allows for community members to connect with the artists, the art they create, and the stories originating from home. “People see every moment of the process,” said Hernandez. “That's really important for artists because people can then see and value our work in a way that's more visible and speaks to what our experience is.” The first VCMP 2017 mural titled Painting the Town , painted on the side of the Coyote Twin Theater in Vermillion’s Pocket Park , features the “ Verm Cat ” love story, The Vortex , and other movie posters serving as visual representations speaking to the stories and values of the area.

“The more public art there is, there’s more awareness of the importance of community stories that weave the fabric of community together. We should be supporting artists, and we shouldn't be suppressing creativity or expression, and that's what's happening right now.”

NORSE ART SPACE

Two local artist powerhouses have come together to open Norse Art Space this past year in Sioux falls. Joe Schaeffer and Cody Henrichs met around six years ago at the University of South Dakota during Schaeffer’s time at graduate school. “I first met Cody during graduate school, shortly after he had accepted the role of head curator at the Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center ,” recalled Schaeffer. “Our paths crossed during a university studio visit, and that initial conversation evolved into a deeper creative connection.”

Henrichs, who has been a working artist for over 20 years, has exhibited his work in cities such as New York, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Portland, Chicago, and Providence, as well as throughout Minnesota and South Dakota. At the Pavilion, Henrichs curated over 150 exhibitions, including working directly with some of Schaeffer’s exhibitions. Over time, Schaeffer says he and Henrich’s professional relationship deepened into a “grounded mutual respect for each other’s practices and perspectives.” “Eventually, Cody joined me at the University of Sioux Falls as a colleague, teaching sculpture and art history in the art department,” said Schaeffer. “Working alongside him in both academic and curatorial contexts, I saw firsthand the thoughtfulness and rigor he brings to every aspect of his work.” Building entrepreneur Paul Gourley had space available at 100 W 39th Street, and reached out to Schaeffer directly with an idea. Henrich recalls Gourley having a strong vision for the space to have an arts-focused purpose, and says his enthusiasm helped push this project from dream to reality. “Paul has been absolutely instrumental. Without his encouragement, insight, and support, Norse would still be just a concept,” said Henrichs. “His belief in the power of contemporary art to transform a space—and a community—has been essential.” Schaeffer says along with Gourley’s passion, it was the architecture and “bones” that drew them in with clean lines, industrial textures, and warmer lighting. “We wanted the gallery environment to feel open, modern, and quietly intentional, creating a tone that resonates with both contemporary art and design sensibilities,” said Schaeffer. He continued, “The visual language we’ve developed blends those worlds: it’s rooted in clarity and structure, but always leaves room for experimentation and nuance. That’s reflective not only of our own practices, but also of the work we aim to show.”

The gallery was dubbed Norse Art Space, named after the original home of the resident, Norse Printing Press . “The name Norse honors that history, while giving it new life,” said Henrichs. “We see Norse as both a continuation and a transformation; it holds the memory of what came before, while making room for something entirely new.” The mission-driven platform was created to challenge, celebrate, and build a “new center of gravity” for contemporary art in the region. A goal for the duo is to make a space that can compete with larger cities. “Joe and I wanted to create a professional, polished exhibition space—something that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with New York galleries in terms of curatorial standards and presentation,” said Henrichs. “We’re seeking work that is cutting-edge, conceptually strong, and relevant work that matters.”

“ One standout moment was a visitor telling us , ‘ I didn ’ t know something like this could exist here .’ That affirmed our vision .” -Cody Henrichs

“What’s my business really worth?” “Can I step away without it falling apart?” “What if I’m not ready to sell yet?” If you’re asking these questions, you’re not alone. Planning to sell or pass on a business can feel overwhelming – it’s natural to worry about the unknowns when so much is at stake. Brady Martz’s Valuation, Transaction & Transformation (VTT) team aims to provide clarity and calm during this process, both in the years leading up to a transition and through the deal itself. With more than 90 years of experience across North Dakota, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Texas, we tailor our services for estate planning, mergers, acquisitions, and more, ensuring personalized and actionable advice for every client. In practice, that means blending deep business valuation expertise with hands-on transition planning and guidance – all focused on your journey.

Planning Ahead For owners not ready to sell yet, planning ahead (even three to five years early) can pay off. The VTT team often starts by answering that value question: they perform a professional valuation to see what your business is worth now and identify ways to enhance it. Over the years leading up to a sale, they help you build that value by improving operations, fortifying finances, and making sure your team can run things day-to-day. The result is a company that’s more valuable and can thrive even when you step back. Guiding You Through the Transition When the day comes to make a deal, the VTT team is by your side to navigate the maze of negotiations and paperwork. They’ve been through this process many times, so they keep everything on track and make sure you understand each step. More importantly, they help shape the transaction to fit your goals: protecting your employees, preserving your legacy, and of course securing fair value. With seasoned advisors handling the details, you can approach the sale with far less stress and more confidence. No matter where you are in this journey, remember you don’t have to go it alone.

While the co-owners are opening a newer space for artist spotlights, they do acknowledge other galleries making a local impact, like IPSO Gallery, Rose & Eugene Presents , and others are creating “much-needed” opportunities. Henrichs says overall the area is still 25–30 years behind Minneapolis– Saint Paul and even further behind cities like New York. “The scene here is eclectic, with very different types of artists grouped together due to a lack of dedicated venues,” said Henrichs. “There’s also a kind of ‘arts monopoly,’ where a few spaces dominate and opportunities are scarce. That said, we see this as fertile ground—a kind of Wild West for contemporary art. There’s room to build something meaningful and lasting.” Imprint is the current exhibition that runs through July dedicated to Cory Knedler , who recently stepped down as chair of the art department at the USD after more than 25 years. "Cory has played a foundational role in shaping both the department and the broader South Dakota art community through his teaching, mentorship, and creative leadership,” said Schaeffer. The exhibition title, Imprint , references Knedler’s background in printmaking, and also is a nod to his impact on the regional arts landscape. “ The timing felt right , not because everything was perfectly aligned , but because we trusted in each other ’ s values and were ready to invest in building something new for artists , collectors , and the region .” -Joe Schaeffer

“We’ve had creative teams and office groups come through for tours, especially from industries that thrive on visual innovation,” said Henrichs. “It’s an intimate and immersive experience.” In addition to hosting exhibitions, Norse Art Space also offers art advisory services for individuals and organizations. Whether artists are interested in beginning a personal collection, need guidance on curating artwork for your home, or want to explore how art can enhance a corporate space or brand environment, Schaeffer says they’re here to help. “We’re invested not only in showing great work, but in helping art find meaningful places to live beyond our walls,” he said. As for the future of Norse Art Space, Henrichs says they envision the gallery giving opportunities artists see nationwide. “Joe and I see Norse as a catalyst for a thriving economic and cultural arts ecosystem in Sioux Falls and the surrounding region,” said Henrichs. “We want to see Midwestern artists—especially those in rural areas—gain the same access to collectors, critics, and opportunities as their coastal peers. Norse is just the beginning.”

“The exhibition is both a celebration and a thank you—honoring the influence he’s had on generations of artists, colleagues, and students,” said Schaeffer. The show features work by current USD faculty, as well as alumni whose practices have been shaped by Knedler’s presence over the years. A wide range of media is displayed, like painting, design, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and digital projection. Coming up next is a collaborative showcase between Schaeffer and Henrichs, focusing on the intersection of light and function in contemporary art. “The exhibition explores how aesthetics and utility can be fused in a gallery setting,” said Henrichs. “It highlights works that straddle the line between sculpture, installation, and design—functional objects infused with artistic intent.” Dates and more details will be released on their website and social media soon. If someone wants to visit Norse Art Space, appointments can be made. The pair offer private walk-throughs and can be as hands-off or hands-on as the guest prefers.

A Family Affair CEDAR WOOD INN

WRITTEN BY ALANA SNYDER & PHOTOS BY JOHN SNYDER

"I have always liked small family- owned businesses that have a personal approach large chain hotels don't have,” said Starla Pressley of Deadwood's Cedar Wood Inn . Pressley started as a general manager of the Inn, owned by a family friend starting in 2021, and then became co-owners of the motel in April of 2024 with her husband and friend. It’s a family-owned business, with the oldest daughter as the office manager, Pressley’s husband as the maintenance personnel (and mingling with guests), her son mowing the lawn, and the youngest daughter helping cleaning rooms or watching the desk.

Six blocks from downtown Deadwood on Charles Street, the city trolley gives easy access to everything the town offers, or it can be a quick walk. The motel has 24 rooms and a custom-made cedar sign in the courtyard designed by Gordy Mack . Since purchasing the Inn, Pressley has given her own spin to the entrance.

"Our number-one feedback is cleanliness. We get compliments daily about how clean our rooms are.”

“Our special touches are the flowers I hand-pick over a few weeks every year,” she said. “I try to find variety, and we change the style annually. We plant mint, basil, lavender, and a variety of different flowers from local greenhouses and flower shops.” Pressley says the rooms “are small, but mighty.” Some have been updated with new light fixtures, comforters, and décor, and some still have hand-painted porcelain light fixtures. “We are slowly modernizing, while keeping the rustic charm people have come to love and expect from Cedar Wood,” she said. Guests often gather in the courtyard at a bonfire or at the upstairs covered patio. Next to the Inn is a playground and tennis court.

Now, Loghan doesn’t just walk. She dances in the Miracle Network Dance Marathon, jumps around trampoline parks and wanders through her neighborhood hunting for ant hills. Graduating from physical therapy was a major milestone, but Loghan’s experience with Sanford Children’s isn’t over. She still attends weekly occupational and speech therapy at Sanford Pediatric Therapy Services. There, her connections with her therapists, Annika Overgaard, OTD, and Ellison Fedders, SLP, make the hard work seem like fun. During her appointments, Loghan works on language skills and life skills, like zipping up her coat. Right now, Loghan uses a mixture of her voice and sign language to communicate. “She loves them,” says Breanna. “She sees Ellie and Annika back- to-back. And then she crashes.”

Breanna has big dreams for Loghan, and they are working hard as a family to help them all come true. “Every time she meets a goal in one of her therapies, we do something fun to celebrate,” says Breanna. “And then we start working toward something new.”

When Breanna Morgan’s daughter, Loghan, was 4 months old, she needed surgery to address a congenital diaphragmatic hernia. It’s a serious condition that, if left untreated, can cause crowding in the chest cavity and underdeveloped lungs. During a follow up appointment, Loghan’s gastrointestinal doctor pointed out a few signs of a genetic disorder and recommended genetic testing. “We hadn’t even thought about that,” says Breanna. Testing at Sanford Imagenetics revealed that Loghan had RERE syndrome, and she was one of just 30 people worldwide to be diagnosed with the condition.

RERE syndrome is characterized by a variety of neurodevelopmental concerns that can affect the eyes, ears, heart, kidneys and more. Some kids can also have autism spectrum disorder, behavioral issues or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Breanna was told Loghan may never walk or talk. But Breanna was determined do everything she could to prove otherwise. With a diagnosis, Loghan could start therapy. She started going four to five times a week, bouncing between physical, occupational and speech therapies. Breanna took home what she learned during each session to keep working with Loghan.

“You have to take what they’re doing and implement it at home,” says Breanna. As Loghan grew, so did her skills. She went from assisted crawling to assisted standing. Over the next few years, Loghan used ankle braces, a walker and a harness to improve her mobility. Breanna and Loghan’s physical therapist, Grant Boltjes, PT, were on the same page when it came to Loghan’s limits. “When she started blowing raspberries, we could tell she was working hard,” says Breanna. “But she was pushing through it.” And all that hard work paid off. Loghan graduated from physical therapy at 3 years old. “That was a really great moment not only for her, but for the whole family,” Breanna says.

Avery

The movie Out of My Mind released at the end of 2024, but it already made it to the top of 10-year- old Avery Hill’s list of favorites. It follows the story of Melody, a young girl with cerebral palsy who uses a wheelchair and medi- talker. Because people underestimate her, she has to prove that she’s not that different from the other kids. And as a young girl with cerebral palsy, Avery can relate. Avery was born premature at just 29 weeks. A few days into her stay at the Sanford Children’s Boekelheide Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, her doctors discovered she was suffering from two brain bleeds. It would take two months of around-the-clock care to help her heal. As a nurse herself, Avery’s mom, Mindy Hill, knew in the back of her mind that cerebral palsy was a possibility because of Avery’s premature birth and brain bleeds. “But everything kind of goes out the window when it’s your kid,” says Mindy. “I know how things work, but when it’s personal, it’s easy to just forget it all.”

“At those early follow-up appointments, we were told she was growing and doing well,” says Mindy. “So her diagnosis felt like a shock.”

“We got right in with Dr. Bauer after Avery was born,” says Mindy. “He has been incredible.” Barry Bauer, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician with a breadth of expertise that makes him an asset to families like the Hills who have children with complex care needs. “As a general pediatrician, it’s my responsibility to understand my patients' medical conditions or developmental concerns, as well as their family and social situation, so that I can provide the best care possible,” says Dr. Bauer. “He is incredibly knowledgeable,” says Mindy. “Even when it comes to things that are just specific to Avery.”

The first years of Avery’s life were full of specialty care appointments. She saw neonatologists,

gastroenterologists, physical therapists, cardiovascular specialists, surgeons, neurologists and more. As they made their way through the web

All primary care providers strive to understand what makes each patient unique and, especially in Avery’s case, that understanding is crucial. “As a child with complex needs grows, additional issues may arise,” says Dr. Bauer. “Having a primary care physician who is familiar with them and their health history can go a long way.”

of specialty care required to meet Avery’s needs, there was a constant – her primary care provider.
