Housing Choices Annual Report 2016-17

The NDIS has presented Australia with a unique opportunity to change forever the way in which people with disabilities live in our communities.

The underlying fundamentals are simple but are too often overlooked. People with disabilities want and should be afforded the same choices as people without disabilities. That means living as independently as they can, surrounded by support networks, family and friends, in a safe and inclusive neighbourhood that accepts and welcomes them. That means being close to transport and amenities, with opportunities to learn, gain skills, socialise, work, move around and connect with others. Housing Choices, like the rest of the disability housing and services sector, must meet these challenges and deliver flexible, innovative housing solutions that will improve the life opportunities of people living with disabilities. We need to get young people out of aged care facilities and ensure that all people with disabilities have a continuous pathway of housing and care as they grow older.

Housing for people with disabilities is something we know well. Approximately 25 per cent of our properties currently cater for people with disabilities. With both knowledge and long experience, we are well-placed to play an important role as the NDIS rolls out its funding models and hands over the choice of housing and support to the end-user. We aim to capitalise on our experience and independence to help inform the long-term future of disability housing and we are actively expanding our disability housing and tenancy management capabilities. We will explore efficient and innovative ways to finance, design and deliver specialised accommodation solutions and, over time, offer a suite of housing options that will deliver cost-effective, long-term, compassionate and sustainable housing solutions under the NDIS framework.
