What if We Listened Like It Was 1776? THE FOUNDING FATHERS DID NOT JUST SPEAK, THEY LISTENED
Every Fourth of July, I pause between the grill smoke, flag-waving, and grand fireworks finale and think about how it all began. Not just the revolution or the battles, but the quieter, more human side of our independence: the messy, passionate, face-to- face discussions that sparked the birth of a nation. In 1776, 13 colonies, each with its own opinions, problems, and priorities, gathered in Philadelphia. Imagine that room? Leaders converged from different walks of life, economies, and beliefs. They were not in perfect agreement, not by a long shot. But they listened. They wrestled with ideas. They debated with conviction, but stayed in the room. And somehow, through a shared commitment to understanding, they walked out with the Declaration of Independence. They laid a foundation that would evolve, stretch, and hold firm for nearly 250 years. And they did it by seeking to understand . That moment — built not just on courage but also on listening — is one of history’s most remarkable acts of collaboration. As World Listening Day approaches on July 18, tucked right behind our national celebration, I cannot help but see the connection. Listening got us started. And I believe it can keep us going. Today, we are surrounded by noise. We talk a lot, but how often do we hear each other? Conversations happen in comment sections, not across dinner tables. Disagreement has become a trigger for division instead of a doorway to
understanding. Listening feels like a lost art in a world full of tweets, texts, and snap judgments. But what if it did not have to be? Stephen Covey’s timeless principle, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood,” is more relevant now than ever. We need to listen, not the kind where you wait for your turn to speak, but the kind where you pause, open up, and seek to understand. What if we brought back the kind of listening that allows big ideas to grow and unlikely friendships to form? I have found that in both law and life, the most meaningful breakthroughs happen not when I am talking but when I am listening. When I ask questions without rushing to conclusions, or sit across from someone who thinks differently than I do and still find common ground. Sometimes, I learn something new. Sometimes, I change my mind. But I always grow. So, as we gear up to celebrate the red, white, and blue, I invite you to celebrate something else: the incredible, underappreciated power of listening. Listen to someone who sees the world differently. Listen to a friend who needs to vent. Listen to a child describing their wild idea or a parent telling a story you have heard a hundred times. Listen to connect. The Declaration of Independence was not created by perfect people with matching ideas. It was created by our Founding Fathers’ willingness to
listen, adapt, compromise, and move forward together. That spirit still lives in us. And I believe, with curiosity, humility, and intention, we can listen our way into a better future, just like we did at the very beginning. Success is about the power of listening and the willingness to compromise. There is no better example of this than the founding of our country. As we celebrate the Fourth of July, it’s not just a time for “baseball, hot dogs, and apple pie” but to remember the birth of our nation and the incredible acts of a few great men to listen, seek to understand, and the courage to compromise. YOUR STAYCATION, YOUR RULES Easily Enjoy a Perfect Home Holiday
Sometimes, the best escape is right under your nose. Planning a staycation in your local area can save you the hassle of long travel days and large expenses but also reveals hidden gems in your own backyard. Here are six ways you can turn your town into a fun staycation! SET YOUR INTENTIONS. Start by deciding what kind of staycation vibes you are aiming for. Is it relaxation with spa-like peace and quiet, or are you looking for adventure and exploration? Setting your intentions will help guide your activities and tailor your staycation to your desires. TREAT YOURSELF. Part of the joy of vacationing comes from stepping out of your routine and indulging a bit.
Why should a staycation be any different? Book a massage at a local spa, order takeout from that high-end restaurant you have always wanted to try or splurge on a fancy “hotel-style” breakfast in bed. Remember, it is all about treating yourself! VISIT A NEW PLACE EACH DAY. Challenge yourself to visit new spots in your area. It could be a park you have never strolled through, a museum you have skipped, or an interesting shop you have passed but never entered. It is fun to see how much you discover in places you can visit every day. DON’T JUDGE YOURSELF FOR NOT DOING ANYTHING. If your most adventurous activity for a day is moving from your bed to your couch or hammock,
that is perfectly fine. Not every staycation day needs to be filled with activities. After all, the best memories can come from hanging out and enjoying the peace of your own space. BE A TOURIST FOR THE DAY. Grab a camera and see your city through the eyes of a tourist. You might discover typical tourist activities you have never done because you live there. It is a fun way to engage with your surroundings differently. REMEMBER, IT IS YOUR STAYCATION. The best part of a staycation is that there are no rules. Sleep in, stay up late, eat dessert for breakfast, or wear pajamas all day. Do what makes you happy because, after all, any great vacation is about that, right?
WHY YOUR ESTATE PLAN IS NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT YOUR DIGITAL ASSETS Digital Assets Are Easy to Overlook — Until It Is Too Late
In a world where increasing amounts of our lives are online, estate planning has taken on a new and virtual dimension. From cherished family photos to cryptocurrencies and digital business ventures, our digital footprints carry sentimental and financial value. Planning for these digital assets is no longer optional . UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU OWN. Digital assets are often misunderstood. While many assume they fully own everything associated with their email, social media, or online shopping accounts, the truth is more complex. Digital assets include any electronic records you own or control, such as:
ones from accessing them after death without clear authorization.
TAKE INVENTORY OF YOUR DIGITAL FOOTPRINT.
The first step is knowing what you have. Make a thorough list of your digital assets, including usernames, passwords, and any security information needed. Then, store this list in a secure location and let your trusted loved ones know how to find it.
your personal representatives and trustees have the legal authority to manage your digital estate, your documents must be updated with language that permits them, clearly and precisely. BACK UP OFFLINE FOR PEACE OF MIND. Finally, do not rely solely on the cloud. Back up important documents and files to a local computer or storage device. Whether family photos, scanned tax records, or insurance information, having a physical or offline backup helps ensure your legacy (digital and otherwise) remains intact and accessible when it matters most.
This is especially important for assets like cryptocurrencies, which are not always
recoverable if lost or hacked. Unlike traditional bank accounts, there may be no insurance or fallback if someone gains unauthorized access to your digital wallet. PLAN WITH PURPOSE AND PROTECTION. Once you have taken inventory, work with an estate planning attorney to include specific instructions and permissions in your legal documents. Traditional estate planning documents may not automatically cover digital assets, and laws governing access are still evolving. To ensure

WHY A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP CAN BOOST EVERYONE’S WELL-BEING
INDEPENDENCE PADDLEBOARD PICNIC RUBY STARS SHERBET TRAMPOLINE
A well-rested family is a happy family, but when sleep is in short supply, moods can turn sour faster than a colicky baby in an airplane! Skimping on shut-eye makes everyone cranky and can
take a serious toll on mental health, leading to stress, anxiety, and emotional outbursts for kids and adults alike. But there is no need to lose sleep, because simple adjustments can ensure your family gets the rest they need. From setting consistent bedtimes to creating a relaxing wind-down routine, small changes can make a big difference in everyone’s mood and mental well-being. BUILD A SLEEP SCHEDULE FOR SUCCESS. As parents, you can set the tone for your family by creating effective sleep- ready routines that include consistent bedtimes and relaxing habits. When your children go to bed at the same time every night, it resets their body’s internal clocks, making it a habit to get enough rest. They will naturally begin to get drowsy at this time and wake up with more energy from better, deeper sleep. Leading up to bedtime, try out some calming activities like reading a book, putting on classical music, or lighting a lavender candle. If your children are old enough, they can try chamomile tea, which is known to help people go to sleep. Limiting screen time to an hour or two before bed is essential because the blue light on devices can keep the mind distracted and wound up, making it difficult to drift off. You can lead by example by putting your phone or tablet away in the evening. SNOOZE YOUR WAY TO HAPPINESS. Studies have found that children and parents who get adequate sleep function better, excel academically, and are in a better mood overall. As we snooze, our body is hard at work resetting our systems for the next day. Still, chronic insomnia gets in the way of those essential repair cycles, making emotional regulation and resilience hard to achieve. With a few small changes to your nighttime routine, you can turn your family’s restless nights into sound slumbers and wake up to a much happier and healthier home!

The Business Legacy You Want Starts With the Right Plan
Running a business means juggling long to-do lists, daily decisions, and constant growth. But one of the most important tasks is often pushed aside: planning for what happens when you are no longer at the helm . Whether you own a family enterprise, have partners, or operate solo, preparing for the future is one of the most valuable things you can do. BEGIN WITH A CLEAR VISION. Start by thinking about the future of your business. Will someone continue it, or will it be sold? A strong succession plan ensures ownership and leadership transfer smoothly. Depending on the business’s structure, this could involve passing the company to a family member, selling to a partner, bringing in a third-party buyer, selling to employees, or closing the business altogether. INVENTORY AND VALUATION ARE KEY. An effective estate plan includes a detailed inventory of business assets. This encompasses tangible items , such as real estate, equipment, and inventory, as well as intangible assets like client lists, intellectual property, domain names, and brand value. TRUSTS PROVIDE FLEXIBILITY AND CONTROL. Establishing a trust can be beneficial, especially for businesses with complex structures or high- value assets. They help avoid probate, streamline
the transfer of ownership, and protect sensitive business information. The business owner can set specific instructions for managing or distributing assets over time. KEEP THE CONVERSATION GOING. You must find a group of advisors to support you: an attorney, accountant, financial advisor, insurance professional, estate planning attorney, investment banker, and key managers. Once your plan is in place, it is essential to discuss it with those it affects. Honest, respectful conversations with family members, business associates, and key employees helps clarify roles and minimize surprises down the road. To help you get started, our firm offers a comprehensive Business Succession Planning Assessment designed to evaluate your current structure and uncover opportunities for stronger planning. We also host educational workshops for business owners, covering everything from asset protection to leadership transition strategies. If you are serious about securing your business’s future, now is the time to act. Contact our office to learn more about our assessment and upcoming workshops. Your business deserves more than a legacy. It deserves a plan.
