EAP NEWSROOM nouvelles@eap.on.ca HAWKS: AN OVERTIME WIN, TWO LOSSES TO MARK THE WEEK Unfortunately, it was the Grads who came out firing.
(Hutchinson Rose, Charbonneau) and Bandu (Charbonneau, Rose) within 30 seconds, but it wasn’t enough. The Canadians held on for a 4-3 victory. Easier road ahead Next week’s schedule, while still packed with three games, could prove more favou- rable for the Hawks as they face teams closer to the middle of the standings.
The week begins with a trip to Kemptville on Wednesday, Jan. 22, followed by a home game against the Cornwall Colts on Friday, Jan. 24. The Hawks finish the week on Sun- day, Jan. 26, against the Smiths Falls Bears. Hawkesbury remains in fourth place in the Yzerman Division with 42 points, trailing the tied Grads and Colts, who each sit at 47.
Navan opened the scoring early in the first period (2:16) and doubled their lead just 42 seconds into the second. The Hawks fought back in the 13th minute of the second period, with Porco (Pelchat, Skoczylas) get- ting them on the board. The Grads kept up the pressure, scoring another early goal in the third to extend their lead. Perron (Pelchat, Charbonneau) brought the Hawks back within one, but a last-ditch effort with an empty net resulted in another Grads goal in the final 30 seconds, handing Hawkesbury a 4-2 loss. Despite the defeat, the Hawks showed resilience, outshooting the Grads 38-30. Tough go in Carleton Place Power plays and penalties were decisive on Sunday, Jan. 19, as the Hawks travelled west to face the Carleton Place Canadians. Four of the seven goals scored in the game came on power plays, including all three of the Hawks’. The game also saw 52 penalty minutes, with Hawkesbury spending 32 minutes in the box. The Hawks struck first less than two minutes into the game, as Skoczylas (Perron, Charbonneau) scored on the power play. However, Carleton Place responded with two goals in the first period, including one on the power play, and held the lead into the second, which remained scoreless. The Canadians widened their lead early in the third, making it 4-1. Hawkesbury rallied with two quick power-play goals from Perron
The Hawkesbury Hawks followed up one three-game week with another—and yet another to come—marking a busy start to the year for the struggling side. The week began on a strong note with an overtime win against the Nepean Raiders on Wednesday, Jan. 15. The visiting Hawks showed their determination, firing 41 shots on net to the Raiders’ 40 and securing the victory with an overtime game-winner. Despite falling behind early, as Nepean scored the only goal of the first period, the Hawks answered back in the second with an unassisted goal from Théodore Jetté (Maxime Charbonneau, Fernand-Olivier Perron). The third period brought plenty of action, featuring four goals in total. Nepean regained the lead early in the period, but Aleksy Bandu (Perron) and Jacob Skoczylas (Jackson Porco, Alexis Trudeau) responded with back-to-back goals a minute apart, putting the Hawks ahead 3-2. However, an 18th-minute equa- lizer from the Raiders forced the game into overtime. In the extra frame, Gabriel Pelchat deli- vered the decisive blow, scoring unassisted just two minutes in to secure a much-needed boost for the Hawks in the standings. Grads come to town Buoyed by their midweek victory, the Hawks welcomed the Navan Grads to the Robert Hartley Arena on Friday, Jan. 17.
