outdoor summer activities. Keep a few refillable bottles on hand, and make sure each family member is drinking water throughout the day. FUEL UP You burn more calories when you’re sweating. Sunny days = exerting more energy. Load up on the snacks! Even if you can’t bring them into the event you’re attending, it’s a good idea to have them in the car for fueling up after the day’s activities. Things like trail mix, granola bars, and dried fruit are great to have on hand. DRESS FOR SUCCESS Dressing in layers in Colorado is essential. Mornings may start cool, but things can heat up quickly. And always pack an extra set of clothes for kids; between popsicle drips, grass stains, and the occasional splash pad, a backup outfit can be a lifesaver. A little planning means a lot more fun, for them and for you. So take a bit of time before your plans this summer to make sure you have everything you need to avoid meltdowns and sunburns.
Summer is in full swing, and while you might be thinking of all the fun activities you’re going to attend in the next two months, you should also be considering how to prepare for those activities so that your family stays safe and cool. Whether it’s an outdoor concert, community festival, or a day adventuring in Colorado’s nature, you can make some simple preparations to If your summer plans include taking your little ones to any concerts or events with lots of people and noise, then noise- reducing headphones or soft earplugs are a must. Avoid the fuss and protect their delicate eardrums. SUN PROTECTION FOR THE WIN Cliche, but necessary. Wear sunscreen, and a lot of it. And don’t forget to reapply! Sunglasses and hats are also a good idea for prolonged time in the sun. Nobody wants to squint all day or get a sunburn on their head. HYDRATE. HYDRATE. HYDRATE. Because, after all, the favorite member of the family deserves some Grade-A chow once in a while. Before you stop by, keep these tips in mind: Bring a leash. Always keep your dog on a leash to prevent them from disturbing other patrons. Call ahead. Policies can change, so it’s a good idea to call ahead and confirm their pet-friendly status. Bring essentials. Water, a bowl, and a few treats can help keep your dog comfortable and happy. Be mindful. Other families are enjoying the space too, so make sure your dog isn’t disruptive. Holistic Beauty Swaps for Quick-Fix Trends
BY SANONNA AL TAWEEL
(DNP). And cosmetic procedures like fillers have an even older history, with the first facial augmentation hitting the scene after the invention of the syringe in the late 1800s. Over the years, fillers and weight loss drugs have established themselves as staples in the beauty industry, partly due to their popularity with celebrities. And now, with the rise of social media and influencer culture, the prioritization of appearance over health doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Because, let’s be honest, the idea of popping a pill and dropping 10 pounds in less than a month seems pretty appealing. It taps into our desire for instant gratification. But what’s often left out of the sleek marketing and 15-second Instagram reels are the long- term effects of these medications; effects that can become a lifetime cycle
without a single mention of the risks. Behind the airbrushed ads and glossy promises lies the relentless pressure from the beauty industry to look young and flawless. This pressure convinces many women that the only path to acceptance and confidence is through products that offer instant and perfect results. Frankly, it’s a lie. There are other ways to take care of your appearance, maintain your long-term health, and boost self-confidence, all without playing into the beauty industry’s quick-fix culture. The cycle of quick, seemingly easy cosmetic fixes isn’t new. The pursuit of the “perfect body” through medication and treatments has been around for almost a century. According to the American Medical Association, the first weight loss drug (also known as a GLP-1) was developed in the 1930s with the introduction of dinitrophenol
If you watched the Super Bowl this year, you may have seen an ad touting its medication as the sensible solution to the rising rates of obesity and associated health risks. Although at first glance the medication appears to be a great alternative to the high prices of name-brand weight loss drugs, a mere five minutes of Google searching reveals that the advertised medication has not been FDA-approved, a crucial step in ensuring safety and effectiveness. Unfortunately, this is just another example of the modern wellness industry capitalizing on the desperation of consumers to pursue “quick-fixes” over sustainable, evidence- based approaches that prioritize long-term health. The same pattern plays out in the market for cosmetic fillers: Promises of instant youth and flawless skin with minimal effort, all

(bone broth, fish, egg whites) and collagen supplements (marine or grass-fed). Topically, use vitamin C, retinol, and peptides to encourage collagen production and skin plumpness. Red Light Therapy A non-invasive, clinically supported tool that helps reduce fine lines, improve elasticity, and stimulate cellular repair. Just 10–20 minutes a few times per week can lead to visible results over time, without injecting anything under the skin. Embrace Graceful Aging Rather than trying to erase every sign of aging, shift your perspective to honoring your skin and features as they evolve. Confidence, joy, and authenticity are more powerful (and attractive) than perfection. Beauty isn’t injected or prescribed, it’s cultivated through care and self-respect. The most radiant version of you is the one who feels strong, healthy, and confident. When you opt out of quick-fix culture and pursue holistic wellness, you’re creating a foundation for a sustainable life.
of dependency.
Gut Health = Skin Health A healthy gut microbiome can dramatically improve digestion, immunity, inflammation, and even acne or rosacea. Incorporate fermented foods like kimchi, kefir, and yogurt, or consider a high-quality probiotic to help restore gut balance and, in turn, support clearer, calmer skin. Move with Intention Activities like strength training, yoga, or even daily walks help shape your body naturally while promoting mental clarity and emotional balance. Digital Detox & Beauty Sleep Blue light exposure and chronic scrolling can disrupt sleep and stress the nervous system. Unplugging in the evenings and prioritizing seven to nine hours of quality sleep helps the body repair itself.
Weight loss medications often come with side effects like nausea, digestive issues, and hormonal imbalances. Not to mention that you’re likely to gain back the weight you lost if you ever come off the medication. Similarly, though less invasive, cosmetic fillers have risks like allergic reactions, infections, and unnatural facial expressions. Beyond the physical effects of these products, harmful mindsets can accompany their introduction. Relying on fillers and medications to make you feel beautiful can foster a negative self-image, take a toll on your mental health, and fuel insecurity. Instead of chasing temporary results, turn to holistic methods that focus on nurturing your body and mind. Equating beauty with wellness is the first step to a sustainable beauty routine. Nourish from Within A nutrient-rich diet full of antioxidants, healthy fats, and vitamins helps support skin elasticity, hormone balance, and energy levels. Hydration and quality sleep also play a vital role in maintaining youthful skin and

Birthday on a Budget BY AMANDA CIANI
I t is true—life with kids can be… baby all of the fanciest toys in the world, yet the TV remote control or a simple set of keys may still end up being the little one’s favored toy. Money does not buy happiness, and planning a day to celebrate a child on their special day doesn’t have to break the bank! With a focus on having fun and spending time with their friends, kids have their priorities straight and their values in the right place when it comes to birthday parties. So check out these fun-focused birthday themes that kids will love, plus a few additional money-saving tips that are perfect for parties. expensive. At the same time, remember the fact that parents can buy their SUMMER CAMPOUT Pop a tent, build a campfire, and tell the kids that camp is in session! Activity ideas include playing games like capture the flag, Mafia (rules can be found online), four-square, or even flashlight tag. Creative kiddos will enjoy super simple crafts like making beaded bracelets, painting rocks, or even putting on a talent show. Throwing water balloons at a target is a great way to practice aim, just like they do with archery
GAMING PARTY Board games, video games, and backyard games make for a fun party that is super easy on the pocketbook. Ask party-goers to bring their favorite games to share. From classics like Twister, Connect Four, Battleship, Uno, and more, it is so fun to compete! To give everyone a chance to win, throw in some simple games like cup stacking, balloon keepy-uppy (keep two balloons up for as long as possible by booping them) or cookie face (start with a cookie on the forehead and try to wriggle it down to the mouth–no hands allowed!). Simple prizes can be purchased for game winners like slinkies, silly putty, tattoos, stickers, and more—it isn’t so much about what the prize is, kids just like being able to win! And since the games are all being brought to the party (or are already owned), splurging on some inexpensive prizes is within reason. FAIRY PARTY A summer garden is the perfect setting for a fabulous fairy party! Guests can transform into fairies by using face paint to paint each other’s faces with butterflies, flowers, etc. Fairy crowns can be made using green pipe cleaners, ribbon, and artificial flowers, while
and riflery at camp–it is also a great way to cool down. Hot dogs on the fire, corn on the cob, chips, and s’mores can help parents stay on theme and within budget. Plus, most homes have lots of items that can be used to set the ambiance, such as lanterns, sleeping bags, tents, and string lights. CHEF CELEBRATION Knock out the theme and the activities all in one swoop with a cooking party. This party theme is ideal for kids who love spending time in the kitchen making tasty treats. Pre-made pizza dough can be purchased inexpensively at most grocery stores, or go all out and make it from scratch! Party guests love personalizing pizzas with a variety of toppings, and a fun twist would be pairing off into teams and having a competition to create the best-tasting pizza! A trail mix or candy buffet can also serve as an activity, with guests decorating their bags and taking their mix home as a party favor. Making homemade buttercream for simple sugar cookies is memorable for party-goers, and then guests can decorate their own cookies for dessert. Additional activities include pin the topping on the pizza and apron decorating!

ins (Tip: It is a good idea to super glue these shut). Buying a few Stomp Rockets would keep the kids entertained and active, too. ADDITIONAL MONEY-SAVING TIPS! Be tech savvy! Keep it simple when it comes to invitations. Websites like punchbowl.com are free and eco-friendly, too. Spending money on fancy invitations and stamps only takes away from the budget for fun activities. Be selective! The same budget can be spent more freely with fewer party guests; keeping the guest list low allows more dollars available per partyer. Be thrifty! Hitting up local thrift stores, Facebook Marketplace, or even garage and yard sales is a great way to stay fiscally responsible. From party decor, games, craft supplies, and the truly miscellaneous, it is amazing what treasures can be found with a little searching. Be a planner! Throwing a party during meal time means feeding an army (spaghetti, anyone?). However, planning the party
during a non-meal time can help lower the budget. Instead of a meal, a wide variety of snacks can be offered! Be a baker! Save the lavish cakes for weddings. Most kids want to devour their cake and get back to playing, anyway. If the budget allows, grocery stores have adorable themed and licensed character cakes. But if the budget is tight, rest assured that kids will enjoy eating “homemade” box cake cupcakes just as much as a fancy fondant cake—funfetti will always be a hit! Staying within a tight budget for a party doesn’t automatically mean cutting out fun. Take a cue from the kids and shift the focus to spending time with cherished friends and doing things together. Sometimes, simple truly is best! Happy partying, and most of all:
fairy wands can be designed with paint pens and cut-down dowel rods (most hardware stores will cut them for customers if they simply ask!). Another cute activity would be painting small terra cotta pots (less than a dollar apiece at Wal-Mart) and planting seeds, or craft paper flowers out of tissue paper for the pots! Serving up drinks in mix- and-match thrift store tea cups would be an adorable addition! Crafty and fabulous, the fairy party uses more creativity than cash! MAD SCIENTIST PARTY Get the party animals ready for some scientific inquiries—Amazon has kits complete with lab coats, goggles, magnifying glasses, and more (only $33 for four complete outfits). Beyond that expense, the common house already has many ingredients to create experiments! Crowd-pleasing chemistry experiments like elephant toothpaste, slime-making, and baking soda/vinegar volcanoes would make for some ooo’s and aaah’s! A great party favor for this theme is sensory jars; save jars and bottles so guests can whip up their own creations using baby oil, glitter, googly eyes, pom poms, food coloring, and other add-

Celebrating Milestone Birthdays BY MADISON VOORHIES Moments That Matter:
B irthdays can be a huge deal for many people (i.e., those who celebrate their birthday all month long… I see you, and I feel you), but we all know some birthdays are bigger than others. This isn’t because of the size of the party or the number of attendees, but because of what they represent. Milestone birthdays mark big turning points in our lives, times when we pause to celebrate not just another year but a leap forward in growth, maturity, and identity. Whether it’s a baby’s very first candle or a young adult’s first adult beverage, these special birthdays offer families the chance to reflect, honor, and have a little fun along the way. 1ST BIRTHDAY That first year flies by, and before you know it, your baby is face-first in a smash cake (unless they’re not, because in my experience, not all babies love the attention nor the mess—and that’s okay!). Rather than focusing on over-the-top plans, lean into the joy of marking this once-in-a-lifetime
age-appropriateness. Gifts that support hobbies or self-expression, like sketchbooks, headphones, or personalized décor, also go a long way in honoring this new chapter. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t throw a party for your new teen; just know that the best celebrations at this age are the ones that make them feel seen, heard, and trusted as they step into this exciting new phase of life. SWEET 16 This milestone is often glamorized in pop culture as the first real taste of adulthood—a moment defined by newfound freedom, independence, and possibility. And we know: They’re not adults quite yet, but I think we all remember how Ariel was acting in The Little Mermaid … just food for thought. Whether it’s getting a driver’s license, staying out later, or simply feeling more grown-up, turning 16 carries a unique excitement that sets it apart from other birthdays, and the “sweet 16” is often a rite of passage. From themed bashes and beach weekends with friends to low-key
moment. It’s a chance to celebrate how far you’ve all come—parents included. Think cozy gatherings, heartfelt touches, and plenty of photos to capture the memories. A first birthday can be as simple as a picnic in the park or a sweet celebration at home, with keepsakes like a handprint painting or imprint, a special storybook, or notes from loved ones to treasure for years to come. 13TH BIRTHDAY Sure, it may seem a little weird to skip all the way from one to 13 when discussing birthdays, but becoming a teenager is a big deal! Thirteen often marks the beginning of a new sense of independence, identity, and emotional growth. It’s also when birthday parties can start to evolve. It’s less about characters and cupcakes, and more about experiences (although we always recommend cupcakes… whether they’re for you or your child, we won’t judge). Sleepovers, escape rooms, or movie nights with a select group of friends may strike the right balance of excitement and

What’s the big deal?
family dinners, how you celebrate isn’t as important as what you’re celebrating: The shift toward independence and the first steps into emerging adulthood. Consider marking the moment with a special outing, custom jewelry, or a first set of car keys if the time is right. 18TH BIRTHDAY Turning 18 signifies the legal threshold of adulthood, a transition loaded with meaning and responsibility. From the right to vote to high school graduation, this birthday often coincides with life-changing decisions. Celebrations might be more grown-up; think concerts, weekend trips, or small gatherings that reflect the birthday teen’s personality. Sentimental gifts, like handwritten letters from family or heirloom items, can help ground them as they step into adulthood. 21ST BIRTHDAY In the U.S., turning 21 is often associated with legal drinking, but this milestone is about so much more. It’s a moment to celebrate full adult independence, often marked by college graduations, first apartments, or even full-time jobs. Families can support this transition by encouraging meaningful celebrations like a dinner out, a mocktail party, or even a gift that supports new responsibilities, like a cooking class, budgeting tools, or a “starter kit” for adulting. It’s the perfect time to toast to the future—responsibly, of course. GOLDEN BIRTHDAY A golden birthday happens just once when your age matches the date you were born. Whether it’s turning 7 on the 7th or 30 on the 30th, it’s a fun excuse for a themed party that truly shines. Think gold decorations, shimmering cupcakes, and a special outfit that can turn even a small gathering into something memorable. Because golden birthdays can happen at any age, they’re a great opportunity to get creative, make someone feel seen, and embrace a little sparkle. Milestone birthdays remind us that life is a series of meaningful moments, some small and some spectacular. However you choose to celebrate, these birthdays give families the chance to pause, connect, and mark the passage of time with intention. And that’s always worth a party.
