THE POWER OF PAYING ATTENTION Humble Hearing, Honest Helping
“Whether you’re conversing with a potential client or a
neighbor, being a great listener is a skill that will always serve you well.”
To be successful at anything in life, you need to be a good listener.
Listening intently can also give you insight into the future. I once had a client hire BLG Environmental Services to work on her landscape during a home
As I continue to move forward as a husband, father, and business owner, I do my best to always walk with God and find ways to improve myself. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my journey, it’s that success is always found in the smallest details. I don’t eat unless I work, so refining the art of selling myself and my services is a consistent goal. Of course, it’s not just about making money. I try to run my life and my business with integrity because I truly care about helping people and making a positive impact. At the end of the day, what matters most to me is being able to go home with a clear conscience, knowing I did the right thing. Getting out there and connecting with people in a real, meaningful way is just as important to me as getting the job done. Those relationships only come from genuinely listening and putting their needs ahead of my own. On July 18, we observe World Listening Day, an opportunity for us to celebrate how we connect through the words we share. It’s an interesting holiday and concept that fits in well with my philosophy as a professional service provider. When I work with clients, I don’t just listen to their requests and ideas for their landscapes; I keep my ears open for details about their lives. Do they have children or pets? Do they have allergies? What are their hobbies and interests? Do they travel a lot? These are just some of the questions I typically ask to get a feel for a client’s needs, and I’m always sure to pay close attention to their answers. For example, if a client tells me of their desire to play sports with their grandchildren in the backyard, I can better envision a plan to create the perfect spot for them. If I know they have pets, I can better determine which plants are safe to add and which could harm their animal companions. Sometimes, a client may have difficulty expressing exactly what they want. By listening to them, I often pick up on certain key words and phrases that give me a clearer picture of what they want from my services.
renovation/expansion. After listening to her ideas on making her landscape
and hardscape comfortable and accessible, I offered a few suggestions to expand and better connect the walkways to her main house and
the new addition. I sensed these larger spaces would better accommodate her and her husband as they aged. Fortunately, creating larger walkways proved beneficial when my client’s husband experienced health issues requiring a wheelchair. By listening to my client’s ideas carefully, I could grasp what she was looking for and then build on her thoughts to help ensure her husband’s safety and comfort on the property. Had I not listened carefully, I would have missed the opportunity to maximize her yard’s potential. Whether you’re conversing with a potential client or a neighbor, being a great listener is a skill that will always serve you well. While it’s helpful for business success, it’s most significantly a tool to help bring us closer together as people.
This World Listening Day, take the time to listen to what those around you have to say and share, and make the most out of the opportunity to bond with someone in new and meaningful ways.

MULCH MAKEOVER MONTH PROTECT YOUR PLANTS (AND MORE) THIS JULY
As Central Florida heats up in July, your yard is working overtime to stay healthy. Mulch is one of the easiest, most cost-effective ways to give your plants a fighting chance through the summer.
refresh, now is the time to revisit it. Here are five reasons why mulch is more beneficial than you might think.
1. It retains moisture where it matters most. With daytime temps soaring and rainfall patterns unpredictable, mulch helps keep soil moisture consistent. A 2–3-inch layer of quality mulch shields the root zone from direct sun and reduces evaporation, meaning your plants stay hydrated longer and you spend less time and money on irrigation. 2. It acts as natural weed control. Weeds thrive in open, disturbed soil, especially after a burst of summer rain. Mulch creates a physical barrier that makes it harder for weeds to take hold, reducing competition for water and nutrients. And less weeding means more relaxation for you.
While mulch is often seen as a finishing touch for curb appeal, it plays a critical role in plant
health and water efficiency. If it’s been more than six months since your last mulch
Hello there! I hope you’re having a great summer so far! I sure am, especially since this time of year is all about jumpin’ in the water. Not too long ago, my family rented a place at New Smyrna Beach. Ella, Gavin, and I had such a great time! I loved boogie boarding, collecting seashells, and watching the boats. My daddy says I’d probably be happy living on the beach full time. That sounds like a great plan to me! Beach season could not have come at a better time for me. I’ve been pretty busy lately as a restaurateur, nursery owner, and hotel manager, so I need a nice break now and then. Oh, you didn’t know about that stuff? Well, in my playroom at home, I’ve turned my tent into a hotel for my baby dolls. The hotel also has a “cooking station” to feed all my hungry guests. It’s quite an operation! Sometimes, I put Daddy to work helping me run everything. I’ll even “cook” for him sometimes. Keeping my babies fed and happy can be hard work, but I love every second! When I’m not at the beach or overseeing my hotel/nursery/restaurant, I usually draw on the sidewalk with my chalk. I’m also thinking about riding horses someday, just like Ella does. should always be cherished. I agree! Time flies by very fast
— after all, I’m already 6! — so everybody should slow down sometimes and appreciate where they are and what they’re doing. I hear adults talk about what’s happening tomorrow or next week, but they forget about today. Whether I’m at the beach or home, I enjoy every day. I hope you have fun this summer and do many things that will give you happy memories later.
Not too long ago, I overheard Daddy tell one of the nice people who put together this newsletter that moments like the ones I have at the beach
And don’t forget to jump in some water, too!

Mulch acts as insulation, keeping soil temperatures more stable throughout the day. This helps reduce stress on plants, especially those in new installations or full sun. 4. It improves soil over time. As organic mulch breaks down, it slowly enriches the soil below. This helps boost long-term plant health by improving texture, increasing microbial activity, and making nutrients more available to roots. 5. It adds a clean, finished look. A fresh layer of mulch instantly sharpens the look of your beds and walkways. Whether you prefer pine bark, cypress, or dyed mulch, July is the perfect time to refresh it before back-to-school season begins. Essential Tips for Safe Summer Biking
forecast before each outing. Heat sickness can catch you off guard, causing nausea, dizziness, confusion, and clammy skin. If these symptoms set in, find shade, drink water, and try to cool down. Know Your Level Be realistic when choosing routes, and check out the mileage, trail conditions, and elevation of any path you choose. Helpful apps include Ride with GPS for route-finding and navigation and Strava for performance-tracking and networking. As you plan, note the trail surface. Riding on gravel or dirt takes far more energy than paved trails. If you want to test your limits, do it on terrain you have traveled before. Gear Up Carry more water than you expect to need, and bring a portable water filter. Poor hydration is one of the main reasons cyclists get in trouble. Also, bring ample high-protein food, a tire patch kit, and first-aid supplies. And don’t neglect the basics: Be sure to wear a properly fitted, sturdy helmet. Don’t Go Alone Let someone know your planned route. Leave a detailed itinerary and planned check-in times with a person you trust. Carry a fully charged phone and charging device, and bring maps as digital downloads or on paper. Also, practice basic navigation skills, such as tracking the sun’s position in the sky and noting landmarks.
Mountain biking is one of the nation’s fastest-growing sports. Drawn by its physical and mental challenges and access to nature, more than 9.2 million people participated in the sport in 2023, up 4% from 2022. Before setting out, it’s essential to realize that off-road biking can take you far from your comfort zone. Riding on rugged terrain is considered an extreme sport with a high rate of injuries, and participants tend to overestimate their skill level. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your enjoyment as a novice in this exciting sport. Be Weather-Wary Familiarize yourself with seasonal weather patterns in your area.
