Why Consider a Gift in Your Will? ....................................................................................................................

The College Development Office can provide further information on legacy giving and provide you with suggested wording for your will: development @ dulwich.org.uk or +44 (0)20 8299 5335. We do, however, advise anyone who is thinking of making a legacy gift to consult independent legal advice before making or amending their will.

As a registered charity legacy gifts to the College are exempt from inheritance tax. As a result the valuation of your estate for inheritance tax purposes is reduced, thereby decreasing your tax liability. Where 10% or more of an individual’s net estate is left to UK charities, the inheritance tax rate is reduced to 36% from 40%.

After providing for friends and family, leaving a gift to the College in your will is an effective and enduring way of supporting future generations of Alleynians. Gifts that are unrestricted allow the College Governors to apply funds to wherever need is greatest, but legacy gifts can be made for a specific purpose, such as support for the Bursary Appeal Fund.

‘My entire educational experience has been at the College, offering me the chance to grow and excel academically, resulting in an offer from Oxford. I have endeavoured to involve myself as much as possible in the many co-curricular activities on offer, playing in several sports teams, the Symphony Orchestra and Big Band, and serving as Chairman of the Biology Society. These opportunities would not have been possible were it not for generous financial support from the College, for which I will be eternally grateful.’
