day celebration to give thanks. This feast included food, games, singing, and dancing.

Turkey May Not Have Been On The Menu The first Thanksgiving meal likely didn’t feature turkey! Historians believe they may have dined on venison, fowl like ducks and geese, and seafood like lobster and fish. So, if you’re ever considering a non- traditional dish, know you’re in line with the original feast! Thanksgiving Leftovers Inspired TV Dinners In 1953, Swanson had so much leftover turkey (about 260 tons!) that they repurposed it into frozen dinners. This invention led to the creation of the TV dinner industry.

It’s hard to believe it’s already that time of year again — Thanksgiving is here. As the holiday approaches, I’d love to take a moment to reflect on the many things we’re grateful for — and our patients are at the top of that list! The First Macy’s Day Parade Didn’t Have Balloons

When Macy’s held its first Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, it featured live animals from the Central Park Zoo instead of the giant balloons we see today. It wasn’t until 1927 that the first balloon — Felix the Cat — debuted!

And now for something extra!

ELEVATE YOUR END-OF-YEAR HOLIDAYS

GO HUNTING OUTDOORS Work off that Thanksgiving meal by

The end-of-year holidays are festive but famously stressful, with fighting crowds and busting budgets. Here are five ideas to elevate your holidays by embracing new, simple family traditions. SHOP-LOCAL FRIDAY Avoid door-busting Black Friday crowds by shopping locally. Visit nearby shops as a family and try out their offerings. Or stay even closer to home by gamifying Black Friday into an online scavenger hunt. Make a shopping list and see who can find the best deals on each item.

end of December this year. Consider making gifts rather than buying them. Purchase supplies for a crafting or baking session and encourage your kids to create keepsakes or treats for loved ones, such as beaded jewelry, photo albums, trinket trays, original storybooks, artwork, cookies, or candy. Your kids will see that many recipients value their effort in making gifts more than the money spent on purchased ones. A YEAR OF MEMORIES The year’s end is a time to remember special people and events. Decorate a glass Memory Jar and ask each family member to recall a few favorite happenings or activities from the past year. Record each one on a slip of paper, drop them into the Memory Jar, make it the centerpiece for a family meal, and take turns pulling out and reading each other’s memories. This simple ritual can spark plenty of fun, plus warm conversations about the abundance that families share.

visiting a nearby park or trail for a hike and scavenger hunt. Give each family member a list of items to find. Small children might look for a pinecone or sparkly rock, while teens could hunt for a bird’s nest or a particular tree species. Your kids will learn about nature while enjoying some adventurous competition. FRIENDSGIVING If you aren’t overwhelmed by relatives during Thanksgiving, consider letting your children plan their own Friendsgiving celebration. This relatively new holiday has become a popular way to relax with your besties, and hosting a kids’ version can help children strengthen social ties. Serve Thanksgiving leftovers or let the kids plan the menu. YEAR-END GIFT FEST Three gift-giving holidays — Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa — all fall near the

Common Sedation Dentistry Myths Debunked!

Despite the growing popularity of sedation dentistry, there are still many myths about the safety, effectiveness, and use in dental care. Let’s clear up some common myths surrounding sedation dentistry! MYTH 1: SEDATION DENTISTRY IS ONLY FOR MAJOR PROCEDURES Fact: Many believe that sedation is just for major or invasive dental treatments, such as oral surgery. However, sedation can be used for routine procedures and cleanings, too! Patients with severe anxiety, a sensitive gag reflex, or trouble sitting still for long periods can all benefit from sedation. MYTH 2: SEDATION DENTISTRY IS UNSAFE Fact: Sedation is extremely safe when administered by a licensed and trained dental professional. Our professionals are trained to assess a patient’s health status and medical history before administering any

sedative. Different levels of sedation are used depending on the procedure and patient needs for a safe and comfortable experience. MYTH 3: YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY UNCONSCIOUS DURING SEDATION Fact: Most patients believe dental sedation means they’ll be completely under, but that’s not typically the case. There are different levels of sedation, including minimal sedation (where you're relaxed while awake) and moderate sedation (where you are still conscious but may not remember much of the procedure.) General anesthesia, where you're fully unconscious, is rarely used. MYTH 4: SEDATION DENTISTRY IS ONLY FOR PATIENTS WITH ANXIETY Fact: While sedation is commonly used to ease dental anxiety, it’s not the only reason to consider it. Patients with sensitive teeth, a low pain threshold, difficulty getting numb,

or those requiring extensive dental work may benefit from sedation as well. It allows patients to undergo multiple procedures in one visit. MYTH 5: SEDATION DENTISTRY IS EXPENSIVE Fact: Sedation certainly may add to the overall cost of treatment, but the expense is often manageable and may even be covered by insurance. For many patients, the benefits of sedation — including comfort and reduced anxiety — outweigh the additional cost.

EXQUISITE LEMON BARS

Your smile is important, and replacing missing teeth matters! But here’s the thing: it’s not just about looks and aesthetics. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth can shift into that space, leading to misaligned teeth, bite complications, and even further tooth loss. Plus, missing teeth can impact how well you chew and speak, which can affect your confidence and comfort. Thankfully, options like dental implants and bridges can restore that gap and help you maintain a healthy smile. THE BENEFITS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS Dental implants are a popular go-to for replacing missing teeth. Why? They’re durable, long-lasting, and look and feel natural. An implant consists of a metal post that is surgically placed into the jawbone, which then is used as a substitute for the missing tooth root. Over time, the bone fuses with this post, forming a solid foundation for a crown on top. Implants do more than look great — they also stimulate the jawbone to help prevent bone loss and maintain your face’s shape. THE BENEFITS OF DENTAL BRIDGES Bridges are a great option if you want to avoid surgery or need a quicker solution. With a bridge, crowns are placed on the neighboring healthy teeth to anchor an artificial tooth (or teeth) in the middle. It’s less invasive and generally more budget-friendly than implants, which can be appealing if you’re looking for something that doesn’t require surgery. However, since bridges rely on surrounding teeth for support, they don’t stimulate the jawbone like implants, meaning bone loss can still happen over time. But, for some people, bridges work perfectly to fill in a gap without the cost and time commitment of an implant. CHOOSING BETWEEN IMPLANTS AND BRIDGES Deciding between implants and bridges depends on a few things: your overall health, jawbone density, budget, and how you feel about surgery. A chat with one of our dental professionals can help you decide what’s best for you. Each option has its perks, but both can bring back functionality, boost confidence, and make eating, speaking, and smiling easier. A Guide to Restoring Your Smile Dental Implants or Bridges?

Curb Your Cough: Discover the Soothing Power of Hot Tea

QUELL YOUR COUGH WITH HOT TEA

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES Licorice root, chamomile, elderberry, and green tea are all linked to reducing inflammation in airways. Licorice root also has anti-spasmodic properties that can help calm irritated tissues, and it is an ingredient in many leading tea brands, including Traditional Medicinals, Yogi, and Pukka. However, it’s best to consume licorice root tea in moderation. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration deems licorice root safe, consuming large amounts can cause side effects, including high blood pressure. SOOTHING, LUBRICATING TEAS While mucilage may sound like the name of an old-fashioned glue, it is actually a viscous, gelatinous plant substance that soothes and moistens irritated tissues. Mucilage is found in teas containing licorice root, marshmallow root, and mullein.

EXPECTORANT EFFECTS An expectorant can lubricate your airways and thin the mucus in your respiratory system. This, in turn, makes your cough more productive, easing discomfort, expelling bacteria, and helping heal your airways more quickly. Teas containing ginger and mullein offer this benefit. OPENING AIRWAYS Some of the most popular herbal teas also help ease cold symptoms. Eucalyptus teas can help open up constricted airways, and teas containing peppermint and thyme also relieve sinus and cold symptoms. In all cases, you can amplify tea’s therapeutic benefits by adding a spoonful of honey! Honey’s throat-coating consistency soothes irritated tissues.

The rattle of coughing is the soundtrack of winter, and about 1 in 5 adults suffer from coughs during the peak cold and flu season. While coughing can signify serious illness, sufferers need short-term relief more often. You should always ask a health care professional for advice when you are ill. But simpler, natural treatments for an irritating cough may be as close as your kitchen cupboard: A steaming cup of hot tea can soothe irritation in your throat and chest. As winter draws near, consider stocking your shelves with teas offering these therapeutic effects.
