Although I had no idea what I was doing, it was a lot of fun. Our group was combined with several others on a big boat that left Oxnard, CA for the Channel Islands. We all caught a bunch of fish and the guides cleaned and filleted them during the ride back to shore. All in all, it was a fun day, but I was glad when we got off that crowded boat onto dry land. I’ve only been back out to sea to fish once since my first trip. Last time, however, I went with a smaller group of friends, and we chartered a private trip off the coast of Santa Barbara. What a difference! It was so nice to be able to spend time with the captain and get specific instructions on how far to drop our lines. He customized our trip for the type of fish we wanted to catch and made sure our lines had the correct bait. At the end of our half- day trip, we all had a big bag of fish and plenty of tales to tell. My group had guides on both trips. What made the second trip much better, though, was that it was tailored to our preferences. We didn’t just drop a line and hope for the best. Rather, our captain guided us through the process and made sure we had what we needed to succeed. I hope I never go back out to sea on an overcrowded boat like that first time. FINDING KINDNESS IN THE PASTURE BE LIKE BUSTER THE BULL
Nothing compares to a good friend. They’re someone who will listen and provide support when you need it most. For everyone in Spartanburg, South Carolina — and eventually the whole world — that was Buster the Bull. Buster’s talent for companionship wasn’t discovered until Wynne Smith moved into the farm next to Buster’s. After he appeared in her barn one day, Wynne was a little scared, but soon, as Wynne told Reader’s Digest in August 2021, Buster became a confidant. “Somehow, he knew when I was home and would come to stand next to my house, and we’d talk over the fence,” Wynne said. “If I had a hard day at work, he heard about it. If something exciting was going on at home, he heard about it. He would stand or lie beside the fence and keep me company, give a knowing glance or breath, and I would feel better. When it was time to end the conversation, he’d turn and walk away.” As Wynne’s connection to Buster grew, she began posting about him on Facebook, and soon enough, the bull had a huge following. People from across the nation and the globe knew that Buster was
special, with an uncanny ability to listen and offer knowledge in a way only cows can. And he provided comfort to all who knew him.
One time, a fan of Buster’s asked if he could meet the bull. The man was dying, and one of the last things he wanted to do was meet the cow who had given him some solace during his final days. With permission from his doctor, the man drove two hours to meet Buster, hauling a basket of apples along the way. Although kind, Buster was never one to eat apples that didn’t come from his tree. But that day, Buster knew those apples were special, and he ate them. Buster did that for a friend. In November 2020, Buster walked into the woods and laid down to pass away. He had been sick, and despite some treatment, the all-knowing bull just knew it was time. He had done what he came here to do: spread kindness.
Today, his friendship still lives on for the residents of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and all the fans of Buster the Bull.

Sideshows have gained popularity since the pandemic, leading to an increase in arrests for reckless driving and speeding. This activity is dangerous and illegal for participants and bystanders. It also earns a misdemeanor that will scar your record for life. Let’s look at the history of sideshows and how they helped create AB-3, which allows the court to suspend the licenses of drivers caught participating in these activities. WHAT ARE SIDESHOWS? At first, these shows were for car owners to show off their cars and their modifications — it was simply a car show. However, it led to drivers doing burnouts and doughnuts in mall parking lots. Other illegal activities soon evolved with this event. The sideshows went from being conducted in empty parking lots to highways across California. The promoters would block off entire streets so participants could race one another. In 2002, a woman named U’Kendra K. Johnson died when Eric Crawford, driver of a car fleeing a sideshow (to avoid the police), hit the car she was riding in. This incident shows how dangerous these events are; thus, the U’Kendra K. Johnson Memorial Act was created. This allows law enforcement to impound vehicles used in reckless driving and racing activities. WHAT ARE THE PENALTIES? If you’re caught participating in or watching a sideshow, the misdemeanor charge could lead to 90 days in jail, a base fine of $500, and additional fees from the state and county. HOW DID THEY LEAD TO AB-3? Because this activity is dangerous and life-threatening, lawmakers wanted to make the penalties harsher to deter individuals from watching and participating in sideshows. The assembly bill makes it easier for the courts to suspend a driver’s license for between 90 days and six months. They could also restrict the driver to only driving to and from work. Numerous tragedies have occurred because of sideshows, and lawmakers want to prevent future tragedies.
